2024 eQuality Scholar Emma Lossing sent us this update:
"My second year at UC Davis has been a wonderful experience. I am currently at 91% progress across my two degrees in human development and psychology. I plan to graduate in Spring of 2027, finishing both degrees in 3 years. As I have completed much of my necessary coursework, I have used this school year to pursue interests in research and teaching.
"This year, I have developed a strong interest in psychology research—specifically the interactions between childhood trauma and psychopathology in adulthood. In the past month, I published my first literature review in the UC Davis Aggie Transcript, my university's official undergraduate research journal. I am…currently drafting my next literature review. In this review, I am examining adolescent ma*****na use in Mexican-American teenagers and cortical thickness in relation to emotion regulation.
"I have also been interning as a research assistant at the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain. I have been collaborating with graduate students to understand how poverty impacts the physiology of brain regions related to stress regulation and executive functioning. This experience has set me on a path for my future career. In the fall, I plan to apply to the UC Davis psychology PhD program to pursue research. I hope to become a child clinical psychologist at the UC Davis MIND Institute, specializing in Autism Spectrum Disorder and childhood trauma research.
"In Spring quarter, I have been devoting time to my peers as a learning assistant in Dr. Victoria Cross's Research Methods in Psychology class. This is my second quarter volunteering as a learning assistant; my duties include holding my own office hours and discussion section, facilitating review sessions, offering one-on-one tutoring, and grading assignments. I have really enjoyed being a mentor.
"I thank the eQuality Scholarship Collaborative for supporting me from the very beginning. I owe all my successes to the generous donors for making college possible for me. Thank you very much for your continued support."
