Recently, Upward Bound wrapped up its Summer Program at SF State! 👏🏼

For their final day, students visited Outward Bound, where they stepped outside their comfort zones, participated in team-building activities, and ended the summer on a memorable note.

It’s been wonderful watching our students grow—not only academically through their classes, but also through college tours, career exploration, work-study opportunities, and other fun learning experiences.

As they head into the new school year, we hope they carry everything they’ve learned, the memories they’ve made, and the connections they’ve built with them. Until next summer! ☀️📚

Go Spartans and Broncos! 🎓💙❤️

Our Upward Bound students had the opportunity to visit both San Jose State University and Santa Clara University for a day of exploring and learning about college life. Walking around each campus gave students a chance to experience the different environments, hear about campus traditions, student life, and academics, and imagine what their own future could look like.

Every campus has something unique to offer, and it’s always exciting to see students ask questions, take in their surroundings, and picture themselves as future college students. Visits like these help make college feel a little more real and remind our students that there are many paths they can take after high school.

A big thank you to San José State University & Santa Clara University for welcoming our students and sharing your campuses with us. We can’t wait to see where our students’ college journeys take them next! 🎉📚

Meet our 2026 NCI Intern: Natalie Siauw 🤍

As JCYC’s NCI intern this year Natalie is currently working on reaching out to NCI alumni to get their stories through one-on-one interviews. 🌟

“The goal of the interviews is to better understand why interns apply to the program, what they gain from the experience, and how the program has impacted them. These interviews will help us understand what aspects of the program are working and where there are opportunities for growth.” - Natalie

In addition, she has been exploring the possibility of rolling out a mentorship program next year for the NCI Alumni. The program would provide a way for alumni from different classes and cohorts to stay connected, support one another, and give back to the NCI community by mentoring other alumni! ✨

Natalie wanted to join NCI because she’s gained so much from the Japanese American community throughout her life. Growing up, she was involved in San Jose’s Japantown, where she formed some of her longest-lasting friendships. She chose to apply to the San Francisco cohort because of her experience attending school in San Diego, where she saw how the Japanese American community differed from the one she grew up with in San Jose. She wanted to step outside her comfort zone by experiencing another Japantown and learning from a different community. She also hoped to build new relationships and connections that will last for many years to come.

Thank you for all your hard work Natalie! We’re happy to have you here & welcome to the JCYC family! 🩶

Another one for the books! ⚾️💊

Our Upward Bound students had the opportunity to tour Oracle Park and explore different areas throughout the stadium! They also met with an events manager from the Giants to learn more about their role and what it’s like working behind the scenes in the sports industry.

Afterward, students visited Avid Sports Medicine where they learned more about sports medicine and the different career opportunities within the field. 🩺

It was a great day filled with career exploration, new experiences, and an inside look at the different careers within the sports industry! 🙌🏼

Thank you to San Francisco Giants & everyone who helped make this experience possible for our students! 🧡🖤
