Wikipedia continues to celebrate 25 years of free knowledge with two wins at the Webby Awards! 🎉

The "25 Years of Wikipedia" time capsule has been recognized as People's Voice Winner in the Websites & Mobile Sites, Education category. And the video celebrating our 25th birthday campaign "Knowledge is Human", created in partnership with the agency Kin, has been crowned a People's Voice Winner in the Video & Film, Corporate Social Responsibility (Branded) category.

Hailed as the "internet's highest honor", The Webby Awards is the leading international awards organization recognizing excellence on the internet.

We are grateful for the support of Wikimedians from all around the world who voted and were essential in achieving these (and many other!) milestones. Thank you!

The planet has a Wikipedia article. So does nearly every species on it.

Meanwhile, Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of freely licensed nature photographs.

Climate science, conservation biology, endangered species, ocean systems: all of it is on Wikipedia, sourced, cited, and maintained by people who care.

Wikipedia's knowledge has always been and will remain freely licensed. However, while our content is free, our infrastructure is not.

Wikimedia Enterprise helps organizations accessing Wikimedia content at massive scale, including tech platforms and AI companies, to do so through a structured, accountable partnership rather than simply scraping it uncontrolled from the web. Through Enterprise’s commercial-grade APIs, customers get high-volume, high-frequency access to Wikimedia’s freely-licensed content for their business needs while directly supporting our financial sustainability.

The revenue goes directly back to the Wikimedia Foundation's mission: keeping Wikipedia free, open, and ad-free for everyone.

You've probably seen a quote misattributed on the internet. It's frustrating. Wikiquote exists so that doesn't have to keep happening.

It's a free, collaboratively edited collection of sourced quotations from historical figures, authors, films, TV shows, and public speeches. Every quote comes with a citation. Here are four ways to use it.

Creating a new article is one of the most rewarding things you can do on Wikipedia. And with the right guidance, it's more achievable than you might think.

Every great article starts with a notable subject, which is something that's already been covered in reliable, independent sources. If it belongs on Wikipedia, you can be the one to write it.

The principles are simple: a neutral tone, information drawn from reliable sources, and community review. The Article Wizard walks you through each step, and the review process is there to help your work shine.

Your article could be the one someone finds years from now. Start writing it today.

Wikipedia is made by people.

WikiProject Editor Retention identifies behaviors that discourage contributors, guides editors to the right forums, and creates mentoring and recognition systems to keep volunteers engaged. It also champions civility and kindness in discussions.

By nurturing newcomers and celebrating seasoned editors, the Wikipedia community builds a healthier, more welcoming space for everyone.

What is the highest honor a Wikipedia article can receive? To some, the answer is "featured" status.

A featured article exemplifies Wikipedia's very best work and is distinguished by professional standards of writing, presentation, and sourcing.

Every featured article goes through peer review, so it's assessed by the Wikipedia community before it earns the star.

Inspired by old school cartoons and love for free knowledge, Baby Globe is now a global sensation.

Jonathan Ferreira, a Wikimedian known online as User:BaduFerreira, was commuting home in the Bay Area (San Francisco, US) when he started sketching on his phone.

He was trying to design something small for Wikipedia Day 2025 memorabilia. He experimented with Bay Area imagery like redwoods, seagulls, buildings. But nothing felt broad enough. So he went back to the thing that felt most like Wikipedia itself: the puzzle globe. He added arms and legs, drawing inspiration from 1920s rubber-hose animation, and sent drafts to his girlfriend asking what she thought of "the little mascot".

He never named it. The name Baby Globe came from the community.

Now it's appearing in Birthday Mode on Wikipedia across different language editions. Baby Globe also has a plushie you can take home with you now through 17 June, and will show up in playful visual surprises across the platform throughout Wikipedia's 25th birthday year.

Jonathan's reaction: "I had no intention for this thing to become as big as it has. It's kind of cool that I just drew this thing and now it could be seen by people across the world".

From humble beginnings to global impact. That's the spirit of the free knowledge movement.

Wikipedia is accessed by over 1.5 billion unique devices every month. A lot of them are in pockets right now.

The Wikipedia app optimizes the world's largest encyclopedia with features built for how people actually read on phones: Offline reading for when you're on the go, an Explore feed that surfaces recommended content, and reading lists that save articles across devices. It's also where you can make your first edit. The app supports contribution, not just consumption.

Ever wanted to learn more about a woman mentioned on a Wikipedia page, but the link is red – missing an article – instead of blue?

Closing the gender gap on Wikipedia is a group effort. Women in Red is one of the volunteer initiatives working to increase the representation of women and gender minorities across Wikipedia.

Despite millions of biographies, women still make up just a fraction of entries. By creating and improving articles about women, volunteers are helping to turn red links (missing articles) into blue ones and to ensure a more equitable record of human achievement.
