The community vision has gone from a small community garden, to a very large one, to one that now includes honey bees, a pollinator garden, and a demonstration and teaching garden to improve people's understanding of the importance of bees in our daily lives. We will have the garden open Saturdays from 10:30a to noon. Please join us! All are welcome, including kids and well behaved pets, with no special skills required - we will learn and share together! Tasks we do each Saturday include watering (come and check out the sunflowers!), weeding, and trash pickup, although there seems to be less and less trash as the garden grows! The three top-priority projects you can come and be a part of are:
The beds at the front gate: plant natives, pollinator-attracting species, and other flowering plants and build out a bed that defines the circle seating area. Project Lead: Diego S. Status: begun to add footpaths and barriers to slow water/rain runoff; a plant list has been created and there are funds to purchase them from Bay Natives. The Mural: Project Leads: Claire & Chris. Status: The artist and homeowners have been exchanging designs and ideas. Once a final design is agreed upon by all, the Arts Commission will pay for its completion! Mulching: Acquiring and applying mulch to the site and creating a berm/compost pile surrounding the apiary. Project Lead: Jennifer. Status: We can get mulch, but have to decide (and acquire) what we want to put under the mulch. Mulching is an ongoing project. Other projects to be rotated in as we complete the above three and as volunteers interest/energy directs:
Build out the gathering area under the tree (including a level area for stage and benches (NOTE: we acquired a hardwood dance floor stage! If someone wants to take this project on, come talk to one of the garden coordinator!)
Expanding terraced beds along the inside of the Palou facing fence. Creating raised beds for growing food after soils testing and if approved by the property owners. Planting along the Palou sidewalk. Define a auto path from the gate to the apiary
