🗣️🎏 Come to the first Japantown Town Hall on the Western Addition/Geary Boulevard Community Study (WAGCS) as part of a $2M, 2-year planning project focused on re-envisioning Geary Boulevard between Laguna and Divisadero. The study is a community-driven effort to re-imagine the area which was harmed by the widening of Geary Boulevard in the 1950s and 60s, disrupting long-standing communities like Japantown and the Fillmore / Western Addition.

The event aims to gather input on how to repair harms and reconnect communities through transportation improvements, urban design, and land use strategies with community voices at the Center. Organized by the Japantown Task Force and Japantown Cultural District SF , and co-sponsored by Japantown Task Force , KOHO SF , and Buchanan YMCA of San Francisco in partnership with The Transportation Authority , San Francisco Planning , and SFMTA

There will be two free sessions available (we encourage you to join in at least one of the two):

🦺[Osaka Way Area Construction Update]:
Overnight electrical safety work on Buchanan Street/Osaka Way near Sutter and Post is expected to take place on select nights from Mon, 5/26 through Wed, 7/2 and may include construction crews, equipment, intermittent noise, and temporary traffic impacts. 🪢At our 2026 JTF Board Retreat, board members and staff gathered at Nihonmachi Terrace to reflect on our shared vision for the future of Japantown. Between meaningful conversations, lunch from .japantown , and a walk through the beautiful private garden, we were reminded of the connections and history that sustain our community.

A special thank you to Reverend Kawahatsu of for creating a beautiful calligraphy of kizuna (絆), meaning “bonds.” Kizuna serves as a powerful reminder of JTF’s mission: bridging divisions, strengthening relationships, and building a thriving Japantown for generations to come.

🗼🚧 Peace Plaza Renovation Update – May 2026🚧

Celebrate the Pagoda’s beautiful new copper roofing while it still glows a soft orange before naturally patinaing to its historic color in the months ahead.

Information from the Recreation & Parks Department (RPD) Peace Plaza Renovation Design Team

• Night work resumed on Tues, 5/20 and will continue intermittently throughout May and June. Work hours are 11 pm–7 am from Monday evening through Saturday morning.
• Expect the highest noise levels during the four-day period from the night of Mon, 5/26 through the morning of Fri, 5/30.
• Work includes leveling the mall entrance finish floor, preparing for waterproofing, and reassembling temporary walkways before the mall opens at 8:30 am. Night work is not expected to impact mall businesses or neighborhood festivities.

Plaza / Pagoda Work:

• The Pagoda scaffolding is coming down! Over the next 7–10 days, including Sat, 5/16, scaffolding will be dismantled and staged onsite before off-haul midweek.
•The Pagoda’s copper roofing is now complete and has passed all inspections.
• Pagoda painting is approximately 90% complete. Plaza painting is expected to begin in about one month.
• Waterproofing work throughout the plaza is ongoing. Some odor may be noticeable during this process, and fans will be used to support airflow.
• Light and dark tile mockups are now visible onsite, previewing the anticipated plaza finish and workmanship.

Garage Work:

• Plumbing and electrical layout and installation work continues.
• Approximately 60 parking spaces beneath the Pagoda, across both upper and lower garage levels, will remain occupied through mid-2026.
• Please drive cautiously, follow posted detour signage, and avoid walking on the ramp between garage levels.

📖📔5/13 Building 640, Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center 📔

This week, the Japantown Task Force recently visited the Military Intelligence Service Historic Learning Center at Building 640 in the Presidio. Located beside Crissy Field under the Golden Gate Bridge, Building 640 was the top-secret wartime training site for Japanese American soldiers in the Military Intelligence Service during WWII. Their intelligence, language skills, and cultural knowledge helped shape history, even while facing racism and incarceration at home.

The space was beautifully curated, featuring historic artifacts and mementos, and immersive historical scenes. The restored architecture of the original building includes a wooden ceiling that blends preserved original planks with modern restoration.

We’re grateful to experience and reflect on this important legacy of resilience and service.

Japantown Task Force attended the first Community Visioning Session hosted by Align Real Estate on the future of the former Fillmore Safeway site. The open house was a freeform event where community members shared concerns and hopes for the future of this important location for the Fillmore and Japantown.

Last night, JTF was proud to be in the house at the 2nd Annual Vision Awards hosted by the New Community Leadership Foundation at KOHO Co-Creative Hub in Japantown — what a powerful evening it was!

Japantown showed up strong alongside leaders and community members from the Jewish community, Black community, and neighborhoods across San Francisco. The room was filled with unity, purpose, incredible speeches, moving stories, and amazing food.

We were honored to hear from five outstanding changemakers:
