Filing an insurance claim after a wildfire can feel especially overwhelming when you’re already navigating loss, displacement, and uncertainty about what comes next.

These reminders from can help you get the most out of your insurance:

💡 Be pro-active in the claim process and keep good notes.

💡 Don't pad or exaggerate your claim.

💡 Give your insurance company a chance to do the right thing, but don't mistake a friendly representative for a friend.

💡 Document and support your claim with proof, details and estimates.

💡 Present clear requests in writing that explain what you need, when you need it, and why you’re entitled to it.

💡 Try to resolve problems directly, but put complaints in writing and escalate or seek outside support when necessary.

💡 Get specialized professional help when you need it. Check out UP’s Find Help directory.

Wildfire survivors from the Colorado Aspen Acres fire are beginning their difficult recovery journey and United Policyholders (UP) is honored to be there to help.

At the Aspen Acres Disaster Assistance Center, UP is providing survivors guidance, resources, and support to help them navigate the insurance and recovery process. Colorado Insurance Commissioner Michael Conway (tag) stopped by to meet with our United Policyholders volunteers and connect with community members impacted by what has grown to a 96,000 acre fire.

Our volunteers understand this journey firsthand as they relied on UP’s resources for their own recovery when they lost their homes to a wildfire and are now paying it forward by helping Aspen Acres survivors take their first steps on the path of recovery.

We are grateful for Commissioner Conway's continued partnership and commitment to protecting Colorado insurance consumers. Together, we have strengthened insurance law and will continue working to ensure policyholders can access the insurance benefits they need to rebuild after disasters.
