Please join us at Q***r Arts Featured in the Castro.

Carol Queen, PhD hosts a group of writers whose lives were impacted by HIV in the 1980s and beyond plus a ritual of remembrance, all intended to deepen our engagement with QAF’s Pride season show, Live Big, Love Hard: Fighting for the Dance, Then & Now.

We’ve invited alums of Stories of Or**sm & Death (convened by the late Matthew Simmons and hosted by 848 Community Space in the 1990s) and The Biggest Quake (a 2010s lookback at the epidemic curated by Kirk Read).

There will be an opportunity to remember our beloved dead and memorialize them. Join us regardless of whether you lived through the ‘80s—learn more about those times that forged our community.

Lovely people!
Today is GiveOUT Day--with countless other LGBTQIA+ and allied nonprofits we are reaching out with news about our projects, goals, and a request for support. Please pass this on if you know people who might want to help with our mission (or even just learn what we are up to by subscribing to CCarol Queens newsletter).
[BTW I did not manage to get signed up with the official GiveOUT site, so we are technically a GiveOUT Day-adjacent organization today. Also, I know this logo says it's 2020, it's not, thank goodness.]
Here's the link for donations, and read on for some Center for S*x & Culture news:

— and thank you! Double thanks if you can pass that on to others in your networks. To mail a check:

Back in 1999, when Robert (our cofounder) and I (CCarol Queen were mulling over what the entity to be known as CSC could be, we had big and expansive dreams--with no idea that really, most would come true! For fifteen years we grew the nonprofit and its library, archive, events and performance space, and gallery--it seems like I was there eight nights a week, unlocking the door for our associates and welcoming all of you in. Then rent got too high and much of our holdings went off to the libraries and archives (and fierce librarians) at Harvard. The pandemic quarantine made it seem like we were just a little gathering of ions on the internet (though we never stopped operating, thanks to the regulars at the Erotic Reading Circle)! Then our friends at Folsom Center adopted us and gave us enough space to start up the library again. (Thanks to our beloved ki****er benefactors!) We don't do lots of public gigs now, but don't miss our two (TWO!!) Perverts Put Out shows during Pride Week. (I'll send the newsletter info again tonight, if you missed this week's announcement.)
This summer we have a big project to sustain: Re-opening the library for regular public browsing and research. And that means we have to move our storage to save money and delve for materials that should be back in SF. We have a super-bookish, fabulous intern spending time with us, cataloging and organizing things. (An intern in the library? It feels like 2015 again lol) But the move, and the materials we need to treat the books and archival materials right, cost more money than our budget currently holds. We really do need support this summer for a concrete project that will allow us to stay true to our mission. In the last year and a half alone we've received three substantial donations, and we want to honor the memory of those donors and their survivors--Carol Leigh, Mark Kernes, and John Bouvier--by letting you see those books. Please do give if you can:

We are a group of qu**rs and friends making space for every adult of every s*xuality preceded by the word "consensual." We believe in culture, and that it is the main way--besides, you know, in the streets ;-) --that people learn about s*x and diverse s*xual/gender/relationship-structured lives. Our project is smaller than it was in 2015... but as you know, the need for such a project has not been greater for well over a half century. In these fraught times, where q***r and erotic agency and joy are at risk but still such powerful forces in our lives, we hope you will support us and our ever-growing library. Thank you to the moon and back for being part of our lives and the reason we made the Center for S*x & Culture in the first place. We love you.
Onward!!!

The Shatter Party

📅 Thursday, Dec 4, 2025
📍 465 S. Van Ness Ave, San Francisco< CA
⏰ 4–8 PM (PT)

What's this about?
What am I being invited to?
Hi, I'm Midori. I'm creating Dining Room, an art installation that comes alive through something I call the Shatter Party, and I'm inviting you to be part of it.
This happens at 465 Art Collective in the Mission, curated by ***rlyComplex.
Here's how it works: each person steps forward one at a time, takes a dish in hand, and with focus and intention-smash! The sound rings out, shards scatter, and suddenly there's a bit of lightness in the room.
Breaking dishes together can feel surprising, even joyful. It's a way of letting go of unspoken experiences tied to family, culture, or the stress of surviving in today's terrifying world.
I collect these fragments, transforming them into Dining Room, a communal artwork built from what you and I released. I've invited mental health specialists to be present at the Shatter Party, offering grounding, support, and resources.
So what are you being invited to? A chance to smash, release, laugh, cry, and add your mark to a shared artwork.
Oh - and there will be donuts.
Midori
