UA Local 38 officers, staff and members are mourning the loss of retired North Bay Business Agent Jim Shugrue, who passed away last month at the age of 82.

Today isn't just the unofficial end of summer — it's a day to remember what built the American middle class: organized labor. Every eight-hour day, every weekend, every safety standard on the job site exists because working people stood together and demanded better. That fight didn't end — it continues every time a journeyman trains an apprentice, every time we negotiate a fair contract, and every time we stand up for the men and women who keep this region running.
To our members, our retirees, and their families: thank you for the work you do year-round, on the tools and in the hall. This day belongs to you.

The United Association will keep advancing the progress achieved over the past decade as it’s delegates re-elected the McManus leadership team, General President Mark McManus, Assistant General President Mike Pleasant, and General Secretary-Treasurer Derrick Kualapai to another term at its 41st General Convention held in San Diego last month.
Local 38’s Business Manager Larry Mazzola, Jr. was elected to his first full term on the General Executive Board as Vice President of District 5 (he was appointed to the position in August 2025).
