Urgent Message from UA Local 38

Dear Local 38 Member:

I’m reaching out to you today because our wages and benefits are under attack.

Legislation sponsored by the Carpenters union, AB 1751, has been introduced in Sacramento that will undermine prevailing wage by establishing a $28.00 minimum wage for residential construction with No Health Care, Pension or Overtime!

This is a naked attempt to drive down wages in our market so the Carpenters can organize and steal our work!

AB 1751 would pay the skilled workers who build California's homes a flat $28 an hour, roughly half of today's wage, and take away their health insurance, pension, and training. Workers need real protections, not a bill that strips away their security.

Today, on International Workers Day, we honor the generations of union men and women who fought for the rights we carry into the shop every single day — fair wages, safe working conditions, and the dignity of skilled labor. Their struggle built the foundation that our apprentices stand on.
At UA Local 38, we don't just remember that history — we live it. Our registered apprenticeship program is organized labor in action: workers investing in the next generation, ensuring that the trades remain a pathway to a strong middle-class career, free from exploitation and full of opportunity.
The apprentices you see here aren't just learning to solder copper, weld pipe, or run a torch on the job — they're joining a brotherhood and sisterhood that has stood together for over a century. They earn while they learn, they graduate debt-free, and they enter the workforce as highly skilled journey-level plumbers, steamfitters, and HVAC/R techs backed by one of the strongest unions in the building and construction trades.
Happy May Day from every apprentice, journeyman, and instructor at the UA Local 38 Training Center. The work we do matters. The union makes it possible.
