A Duel on the Keys: GOCAA Young Artist Shan Liu Closes Auckland Festival with a Magnificent Prokofiev Performance

From GOCAA to Auckland: The Journey of a Young Artist

In 2023, when Shan Liu won the title of Young Artist at the GOCAA (Global Outstanding Young Artists Competition), the international music world began taking notice of this young pianist. Having grown up in Auckland, he has chosen not to rush into frequent performances, instead opting for a steady pace and high-quality collaborations.

This second collaboration with the St Matthew’s Chamber Orchestra and fourth performance alongside Michael Joel exemplify such careful selection. For a rising performer, repeated collaborations with the same conductor and orchestra signify a deep artistic alignment between both parties.

"It's incredibly valuable for me to have such a long-term artistic connection with the local Auckland orchestra and conductor," Shan Liu told reporters after the performance. "The acoustic environment of St Matthew's Church, the unique sound qualities of this orchestra, and Michael's understanding of the concerto—everything about it makes each time I perform here feel like coming home. Prokofiev's Third is a work I've always wanted to take on; it demands an almost instinctive rapport between soloist and orchestra. I'm fortunate that this afternoon, we achieved it."

The echoes have not yet faded.

As the final chord's echo faded beneath the soaring dome of the church, applause surged like a wave. Shan Liu rose from the piano bench, bowed to the audience, then turned to the orchestra, offering a nod to each musician in turn, before finally shaking hands firmly with Michael Joel—a gesture born of mutual trust and shared achievement.

The 2026 Auckland Festival officially concluded with this performance. But for the audience present that afternoon, the moment created by a locally raised yet fully matured musician and an equally vibrant orchestra within Prokofiev's tense and powerful notes will linger in memory for years to come.

It was a local youth standing between the piano keys and the baton, composing a magnificent symphony of growth and dialogue through skill and emotion, courage and humility.

We bring original works by young Chinese composers to the world stage—works rich in Chinese elements. Hearing Western orchestras perform these pieces fills us with pride for China's new generation of young talent.

During the major performance showcase of the 2nd Spanish-Chinese Youth Concerto Festival, *Spring Awakening: Overture*—an original symphonic masterpiece by Liu Zekai, a young Chinese music theorist and composer born in the 2000s—was performed to stunning effect, marking its successful European premiere. The Malaga Youth Symphony Orchestra (Joven Orquesta Provincial de Málaga) delivered a masterful performance, perfectly bringing to life this symphonic work that is rooted in the cultural heritage of the Lingnan region and blends Eastern and Western creative philosophies. The lyrical melodies of an Eastern spring transcended mountains and seas to resonate within Europe's hallowed halls of art. With a "new Chinese voice" that embodies both poetic grandeur and the spirit of the times, the piece sparked a wave of Chinese-style symphonic music across civilizations, garnering high praise from European industry authorities, international music critics, and audiences alike.

​Bajo la dirección del maestro Juan Paulo Gómez, el programa ofrecerá un recorrido extraordinario que abarca desde la creación contemporánea hasta las obras maestras del clasicismo y el romanticismo.

​Contaremos con la participación solistas ganadores de diferentes premios en el concurso que GOCAA organiza anualmente:

✨ Zekai Liu – Quien presentará el estreno en España de su propia obertura Vernal Dawn – Overture.
✨ Zijing Guo – Interpretando el Concierto para piano en re menor de Florence Price.
