Totem Community

Totem is a community of people who want to share our stories, and to hear yours. Circles are moderated by Keepers: people who specialize in safe communication.

You are free to speak your truth without interruption. For centuries, our ancestors have been sitting in circle. They used a talking piece, a totem, to grant each person a time to speak. Through circle, they’ve built complex societies based on peace and understanding. We think it’s time we do the same.

We at Totem get the opportunity to share space and learn from so many incredible communities. However this is one of our most prized Circles. The first and third Thursday of the month we get the privilege to share Totem with the inmates at Buncombe County Jail. There is insurmountable strength, resilience and wisdom we gain from sharing space with these women. This first image is of one of the cell blocks inside of the jail. We won't ever share stories of the inmates or their identities but if you want to learn more about what it's like doing a program in jail or the services we provide DM us.

Many women suffer from severe postpartum depression because of their struggles with breastfeeding and many of their loved ones struggle with knowing how to support them. So, Momma's who have breastfed for 39 weeks or 39 minutes, we see you, we support you and we celebrate you.
