Pacific Environment Working to promote a healthy climate 🌏, reduce pollution 📉 and conserve biodiversity 🐠🐙🐋 for an equitable and thriving future ✨.

Pacific Environment is a non-profit organization that protects the living environment of the Pacific Rim by promoting grassroots activism, strengthening communities and reforming international policies. For nearly two decades, we have partnered with local communities around the Pacific Rim to protect and preserve the ecological treasures of this vital region. Our success stems from a deep and abid

ing trust that local people, armed with the right tools and solid support, are the world's best hope for environmental renewal. We see ourselves as a catalyst in a community of individuals and organizations working to protect the Pacific Rim's wild places and wildlife. As such, we support the development of grassroots organizations around the Pacific Rim, prioritize coalition-based advocacy, and use international leverage points in the service of our local partners. Together with partners in Russia, China, Japan, Alaska, California and elsewhere, we've shielded tens of thousands of acres of old growth forest; we've won protections for endangered species; we've forced oil, gas and mining companies to heed local concerns; and we've changed the way some of the world's most powerful financial institutions work.

“Angelenos deserve better than an Olympics that leaves behind a pile of plastic for cleanup. The Games are a monumental moment to showcase real solutions — including reuse and refill systems at scale — to prevent single-use plastic pollution in the first place.” 🔥

In a letter to the editor published in the , Kristen McDonald, senior plastics program director, argues that the proposed partnership with the The Ocean Cleanup ahead of the 2028 L.A. Olympics is misguided at best and a greenwashing stunt at worst.

🚨BREAKING: just released a new report tracking what really happens to “widely recyclable” cold cups.

Researchers placed Bluetooth-enabled trackers inside Starbucks cups and dropped them into the company’s in-store recycling bins across nine states and D.C.📍

The result: not a single cup ended up at a recycling facility. One cup traveled 463 miles — to a landfill. 👀

Last Friday, May 22, the country celebrated , which highlights the essential role the maritime industry plays in supporting the nation’s economy, national security, and the future of global transportation. From keeping supply chains moving to ensuring the strategic movement of goods and resources, a strong maritime sector remains fundamental to American resilience and prosperity. 🚢

Read the announcement from the White House here: https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/2026/05/presidential-message-on-national-maritime-day/

Looking ahead, true maritime excellence will not be measured solely by the number of commercial ships on the water. Instead, it will be defined by the ability to innovate to build a cleaner, healthier and more resilient maritime future. The U.S. possesses the engineering ingenuity and skilled workforce necessary to build the cleanest, most efficient fleet in the world.

As the global shipping sector moves to the use of more sustainable fuels and next-generation technologies, U.S. leadership in the development and deployment of advanced marine vessels is critical to not only reducing harmful pollution but also securing global economic competitiveness and helping build the maritime economy of the future.💰

“The global transition toward cleaner shipping is already underway, and the U.S. cannot afford to be left behind. Advancing clean maritime fuels and technologies is a strategic advantage. By leading this transition, we are revitalizing our domestic industrial base, ensuring national energy security, and expanding the maritime workforce for generations to come,” said Antonio Santos, Federal Climate Policy Director at Pacific Environment.

Congratulations to the Da Nang City Peoples’ Committee for taking action on plastic pollution in tourism! 🎉

The new document developed by the committee encourages tourism businesses to:

📉 Limit the use of single-use plastic products (including plastic water bottles, plastic cups, plastic straws, nylon bags and styrofoam boxes)
🫙 Support reuse models for food and drinking water
🔀 Sort and classify waste on site

The Da Nang Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism will also continue to promote environmentally-friendly tourism models.

Happy Clean Air Month!

By addressing maritime shipping pollution and industrial pollutants, we are working to keep our air clean for everyone. Here’s what the Pacific Environment team is up to this month:

🏭 Working alongside port communities in New Jersey — where families in Newark, Elizabeth and Bayonne have long shouldered the health burden of diesel pollution from the largest and busiest cargo ports on the East Coast — to curb ships pollution and stop fossil fuel build out.

⚡Across Asia, wherein South Korea and Japan, we are reimagining maritime infrastructure as a driver of clean energy and to transition ships and ports to zero-emissions technology.

🌊 At the where our advocacy helped secure the world’s largest clean air zone at sea in the North-East Atlantic years in the making.

Clean air is a matter of health, equity and justice and we are proud to be in that fight wherever it takes us. Learn more in our new blog: https://www.pacificenvironment.org/happy-clean-air-month-from-pacific-environment/
