Goldman Environmental Prize The world's foremost award honoring grassroots environmental activists.

The Goldman Environmental Prize honors grassroots environmental heroes from the world’s six inhabited continental regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands & Island Nations, North America, and South & Central America. The Prize recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk. The Goldman Prize views “grassroots” leaders as those involved in local efforts, where positive change is created through community or citizen participation in the issues that affect them. Through recognizing these individual leaders, the Prize seeks to inspire other ordinary people to take extraordinary actions to protect the natural world.

It started with a heat wave. ☀️ After South Korea experienced a major heatwave in the summer of 2018, Borim Kim decided to take on her country’s climate policy.

In 2024, Borim and 청소년기후행동-Youth 4 Climate Action in Republic of Korea won the first successful youth-led climate litigation in Asia. 👏

The historic decision is a watershed moment for the climate change movement in Asia.

🌊 In 2018, Claire Nouvian won the Goldman Environmental Prize for a data-driven campaign that helped secure an EU-wide ban on deep-sea bottom trawling.

Now she and her French nonprofit, BLOOM, are taking on Europe's biggest fishing vessels. A new BLOOM report, according to Inside Climate News, finds that just 638 out of Europe's 60,000 fishing boats, particularly those 108 feet or longer, are responsible for most of the harm to marine life.

"They're one percent of the fleet, and they threaten 99 percent of fishers," Claire says. "Small-scale fishers are desperate," she adds. "They're really hopeless and want these boats out of their waters."

“Power of The People,” a short documentary film about 2026 Goldman Environmental Prize winner Alannah Hurley screens at the San Francisco Green Film Festival this October.

A Yup’ik leader, Alannah and the United Tribes of Bristol Bay helped to stop the proposed Pebble Mine project that threatened Alaska’s Bristol Bay region. The victory safeguards Bristol Bay and its greater watershed—encompassing 25 million acres of wilderness, rivers, and wetlands and home to the largest wild salmon runs in the world—from the construction of what would have been North America’s largest open-pit mine.

The film was produced and directed by longtime partner Will Parrinello.

🎉 A: By partnering with local communities!

Hosted by Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) and the Goldman Environmental Prize, Monday night’s “The Wild Side of NY Climate Week” brought together WCN members and Goldman Prize winners for a conversation about the power of locally led campaigns to advance environmental solutions.

WCN's board member Lalampaa Peter and winners Iroro Tanshi (Nigeria, 2026) and Chibeze Ezekiel (Ghana, 2020) spoke about their successful campaigns working with local communities. Peter is working to protect Grévy's zebra in Kenya, Iroro is working to protect Nigeria’s forests from wildfires and Chibeze helped prevent the coal industry from entering Ghana.

The Goldman Environmental Prize is on the ground in New York at Climate Week NYC!

Our team is here alongside winners Yuvelis Morales Blanco, Chibeze Ezekiel, Iroro Tanshi, Alexandra Narvaez, and others, meeting with partners and sharing their work with a global audience. The Prize winners also have the opportunity to build alliances, raise funds, and grow their capacity as environmental defenders.

The fight to keep oil in the ground continues in Surrey, England—and winner Sarah Finch and the Weald Action Group are keeping up the pressure.

In the wake of the landmark "Finch Ruling" by the UK Supreme Court, UK Oil and Gas retreated from its Horse Hill drilling project, selling the property at a massive loss and rebranding as a clean energy company. Unfortunately, the new owner has already applied for permission to drill on the site.
