Goldman Environmental Prize

Goldman Environmental Prize The world's foremost award honoring grassroots environmental activists.

The Goldman Environmental Prize honors grassroots environmental heroes from the world’s six inhabited continental regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands & Island Nations, North America, and South & Central America. The Prize recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk. The Goldman Prize views β€œgrassroots”

leaders as those involved in local efforts, where positive change is created through community or citizen participation in the issues that affect them. Through recognizing these individual leaders, the Prize seeks to inspire other ordinary people to take extraordinary actions to protect the natural world.

Batmunkh Luvsandash won the for Asia at πŸ‘ 81-years-old. πŸ‘

A former livestock herder, Batmunkh collaborated with Nature Conservancy to map part of Mongolia’s vast grasslands and document its biodiversity. The result? A 66,000-acre protected area.

In an interview with Yale Environment 360, Batmunkh noted, "I never aimed for any national or international prizes." Rather, he was motivated by a love for his country, its nature, and its herder communities.

A major victory for South Africa's Wild Coast! πŸŒŠπŸŽ‰

South Africa's Constitutional Court has ruled in favor of coastal communities and environmental organizations, ending attempts by Shell and others to preserve offshore oil and gas exploration rights along the Wild Coast. The landmark decision affirms the rights of local communities to have a meaningful say in decisions that affect their environment.

This win builds on years of grassroots advocacy by communities and activists, including 2024 Goldman Environmental Prize winners Nonhle Mbuthuma and Sinegugu Zukulu.

When communities come together, they can protect both people and nature. πŸ’š
