What a beautiful planting in Japantown! Community volunteers planted 26 trees as part of our 7th Trees of Faith planting supported by a grant from American Forests’ Catalyst Fund and in collaboration with the San Francisco Interfaith Council.
Huge thanks to all the volunteers, our Planting Leaders, Supervisor Stephen Sherrill, and our community collaborators: Buddhist Church of San Francisco, Japanese American Religious Federation (JARF), St. Benedict Parish for the Deaf, and Convent & Stuart Hall.
Extra special thanks to Elaine and Gary of Buddhist Church of San Francisco, and to Mary Ann of St. Benedict Parish for the Deaf for providing space for our community meeting, kickoff, tools, and vehicles before and after the planting.
Community volunteers planted autumn gold maidenhair tree, Chinese flame tree, City Sprite® Japanese zelkova, columbia London plane, corn oak, greenspire littleleaf linden, island oak, Japanese flowering cherry, morning cloud, musashino columnar zelkova, netfleaf oak, Ray Hartman California lilac, trident maple and water gum.
The Japanese flowering cherry, City Sprite® Japanese zelkova, trident maple, and autumn gold maidenhair tree were selected for their Japanese heritage and connection to the neighborhood’s history.
