The Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh), headed by Governor Aris Aumentado, attended a dinner meeting with the esteemed Board of Directors of Philos Health members. The gathering took place at Cafe Dolores, Bohol Tropics, Tagbilaran City.

Among those present at the meeting were former Mayor Exoperio Lloren, Provincial Health Office Head Dr. Reymoses Cabagnot, Forrest Malakoff President and Founder of Philos Health Dr. John Rosenberg, together with Annie Lin, Dr. John Chen, Dr. Jerome Stefanko, and Dr. Judy Flynn.

They discussed expanding Philos Health's programs to encompass additional municipalities within Bohol, together with the PGBh's requested assistance for the shipment of medical supplies from the USA to Bohol.

This collaborative dialogue underscores a shared commitment to advancing inclusive healthcare and the well-being of Boholanos as envisioned in the Strategic Change Agenda.

The pandemic has taken a horrific toll on the economy of the Philippines and on many of the people of Jagna, Bohol that Philos Health has been serving for the past 17 years. Having enough food to feed their families has been a daily struggle. The risk of malnutrition among children is enormous.

To compound the misery, Super Typhoon Odette hit the Province of Bohol on December 16th resulting in further devastation. Thousands of homes were destroyed or damaged. Water and electricity are nonexistent and food supplies are even more scarce as farms were destroyed and roads to deliver supplies become impassable. Shortages have caused a spike in food prices further exacerbating people’s ability to feed their families.

Philos Health, while unable to travel to the Philippines due to pandemic closures, has responded to the urgent plea for help.

Our team in Jagna does whatever it takes to provide assistance to those in need, but we need more resources — as hunger continues to rise during this crisis. Every dollar goes for relief; we have NO overhead expenses

Over the last 17 years, Philos Health’s emphasis on collaboration and partnership with locals of Jagna has been essential in providing impactful service during each medical mission.

Philos Health has built strong connections with the local government, NGOs, and healthcare providers that allow us to consistently deliver effective patient care to the population. This collaboration with the community helps us identify local needs from a distance, allowing us to gather the resources necessary to continue providing a lasting impact on our missions.

This partnership also allows us to supplement our own supplies with the plethora of resources already provided within the local hospital and barangays.

Philos Health has responded to the pandemic with a special food supplement program to address the needs of residents out of work. All our dental, medical, and nutrition programs continue but we have not made our regular visits to Jagna to supplement care of our partners.

We are gearing up to return when it is safe in early 2022. We are recruiting volunteer doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and other health care providers.

According to the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, more than 625,000 people in the U.S (65,485 in California) have died from COVID-19 since January 2020. As of August 23, 2021, about 51.5% of the US population have been fully vaccinated to help protect them from the disease. A recent study in the journal Health Affairs estimates that the number of COVID-19 deaths that the U.S. has averted as a result of its vaccine distribution may be close to 140,000.

Meet Howard Sedavia, one of the earliest patients of Philos Health. During a construction accident, he lost both his arms. He had no possibility of getting a prosthesis. Philos provided it for him and he is now independent and living his life to the fullest in service to others. He now works with the local government in Jagna, Philippines supporting persons with disabilities.
