Pythagoras Lodge #862 We are a non profit organization dedicated to the improvement of each member and our community.

In this issue of Magazine, we’re exploring the many ways in which Masons and give back—and in so doing, form a massive, if largely invisible, network of community support.

From extensive surveying, members, and especially new members, are looking for ways to engage in community service. Our lodges are in a perfect position to give them precisely that, whether it's a pancake breakfast benefitting the high school football team, or an SPCA vaccine clinic in a lodge parking lot, or a scholarship bequest from the 1960s that's still supporting students in California.

Of course, that's not the only way California Masons support one another and the communities around them. Whether it's building on a century-old tradition of local relief, establishing a legacy for future generations, or bringing life-changing resources to some of the lowest-performing schools in the state, the impulse to give back is a strong one here.

PYTHAGORAS INFLUENCE ON FREEMASONRY

Brethren greetings from the west of the Senior Warden of your lodge.
At the formation of our lodge 10 years ago. The name of the lodge was floated and there were options but Pythagoras received the highest votes for approval and the name of our lodge became and will continue to be Pythagoras Lodge. We chose this great Greek philosopher as our celestial patron because of the enormous influence of his philosophy on Freemasonry.
Pythagoras is know as one of the key philosopher that formalized Geometry as the foundation for understanding the universe. And we in Freemason see Geometry as the noblest of sciences and the super structure upon Freemasonry is erected. The geometric tools associated with our rituals have a lot to prove in this for we can not probe the mysteries of the universe without them. The squaring of our action through lifeas we strive to achieve the mystical morality by learning, to subdue our passions and move from being good to becoming better and better until we are able to chisel out all our rough edges and become that perfect stone that when placed on the superstructure of the temple will make a perfect fit. This is our noble goal.
Pythagoras number system became one of the strongest foundation in Renaissance occult and mystical revival which Freemasonry was a big benefactor. Esoteric traditions like Kabbalah, Alchemy and Hermeticism used the foundation of number system laid out by Pythagoras to build their systems. The whole western esoteric tradition was built on the basis of this number system. One big example of this in Freemasonry is the representation of the flight of winding stairs which compose of numbers 3, 5, and 7. These are deeply esoteric numbers which have strong roots in Pythagorean philosophy.
Pythagoras on his return from Egypt after spending about 27 years studying Egyptian mystical traditions settled down in Italy where he formed his own initiatic tradition with graded levels of instructions which is similar to the degrees we have in Freemasonry, moral qualification for entry which Masonry does today by conducting a background investigation beforeadmitting a new member and a structured and graded teachings which are the degrees in Masonry today.
We in Freemasonry owe this great philosopher a great deal of gratitude for laying the foundation upon which the pillars of fraternity has stood as the world oldest fraternity . In due time we will organize a full lecture to elaborate in more details about Pythagoras and his philosophy and his influence on Freemasonry. Thank you all brethren for being loyal members of Pythagoras lodge and Freemasonry in general and may the Grand Architect of the universe continue to bless us and may our lodge and fraternity live forever.

From the East
Happy Holidays!

This is Sean Duke Cassidy, your outgoing Worshipful Master at Pythagoras for 2025. Thank you all for allowing me to serve these last two years. I hope to have left the lodge in as good a shape, or better while I was at the helm. We have made great strides this past year, and we were very active, both in initiating and raising both members of our lodge, and helping out Coastside. Thank you for all of the hard work that has gone into making this happen, and to Worshipful Mike Tarver for putting the degree teams together. It takes a village!

I have little doubt that Worshipful Mark Harris, who will be serving as Master in 2026 will work hard to make the lodge stronger. He is off to a great start already, with a full line of officers that we can all continue our Masonic journey with.

All the best, and see you at the lodge!
Duke
