We are an educational non-profit that leverages the humanizing power of poetry to develop social emotional skills, build community and empower action. When I first watched Matt Davis teach in Oakland eight years ago, even students without the grades to enroll were listening in the hall. Matt talked to his students like fellow human beings, on a shared journey into the fullness of their humanity th

at transcended, but also brought to life, any subject for learning. He met every student with a respect and dignity that blossomed into the confidence to be fully a student, and pointed them again and again to their own capacity for wisdom and knowledge. When I asked Matt about his approach, he said: "What's been lost is the will, the seed, for learning, but it's there if you know how to listen for it." This statement became the foundation of work over many years, and the students we met along the way became the "seed" of Pseads. Knowing how and why we learn, in ways that draw out the best of all disciplines, and address what it means to be a human being, is the aim of Pseads.
