"...the SESP is an opportunity to integrate the dream of 100 per cent literacy into a holistic vision and a road map that can define a sustainable educational agenda for Sindh. It is time those at the helm were questioned and challenged, and the public was engaged to create ownership so that education and the goal of achieving increased literacy gets a much-needed push in Sindh."

The vision of 100 per cent literacy — especially in Sindh — seems to be fading like a mythical dream

We think it's really important for donors and the general population to be well-informed about education and policy, so here's a great reading list!

This post is part of a series from RISE (Research on Improving Systems of Education), CGD and partners’ program on education reform in the developing world. What should you read first if you’re a new policy advisor in a Ministry of Education? I’ve had two emails with this question in the last week a…

ADP is proud to share its latest project to construct a secondary school in Gujranwala with the support of Friends Development Organization. FDO opened this primary and secondary school in 2012, providing education to low-income families in Landay Sharif that primarily serve as bonded labor to nearby farms and brick kilns. Due to overwhelming demand, the school is now forced to turn away new students. ADP is funding the construction of a new school building that will enroll 145 students immediately. ADP recently approved for funding an education project with the organisation Friends Development Organisation (FDO). The project concerns a school in Gujranwala which after outgrowing its initial capacity, is having to turn away students. ADP funding will contribute towards construction costs for expansion in order to facilitate more students.

At the webinar, you will get a chance to meet the remarkable Evaluation Team; Alexis Saba (PEC), Farooq Shaikh (PTL), Usman Masood (PTM) and Owais Rasool (PTM).

They will be discussing:
1. An overview of the Project Proposal
2. Details of the diligence process
3. How approval for funding was concluded
4. What are the next steps to ensure smooth completion

The session will take place for one hour maximum. We promise to keep the content session brief, so that there is plenty of time left for Q&A

The village of Landay Sharif, Tehsil Nosheran Verkan, District Gujranwala, is home to low-income families that primarily serve as bonded labor to nearby farms and brick kilns. This primary and secondary school operates in two rented buildings containing 5 rooms with classes from Nursery till 10th grade. FDO has therefore approached ADP to fund the construction of a new school building that will have expanded capacity to accommodate more students. The proposed building will be located at a nearby site donated by the community and contain 10 classrooms, 4 washrooms, a playground, a library and a computer lab. Requested funds will also be used for the purchase of furniture and electricity wiring work in the new building.

"There is a long list of problems with science education in the country. Textbooks written for Pakistani textbook boards and colleges are dreary and uninteresting, and only overload students with facts. Badly printed, they are terse in their explanations, and care little for graphic presentations. Teachers are either untrained or poorly trained, and hence uninspiring. Many have poor knowledge of the subject they teach, and hence discourage questions, and kill curiosity."

When it comes to teaching science, the biggest issue is the medium of instruction
