Red Poppy Art House

Red Poppy Art House A multidisciplinary community art space. www.redpoppyarthouse.org

The Red Poppy Art House is an on-site exploration in cultural-artistic-community engagement in the residential sector of the Mission District of San Francisco. With an aesthetic often likened to small cafés found on the back streets of European and South American cities, the Art House serves as a micro-center for artistic development, experimentation, and presentation, framed within the intimate s

etting of a 650-square foot commercial locale. Through this context, we seek to make visible the full living of artists, making the space itself as accessible and familiar and as one's neighborhood corner store. Continually shape-shifting in form, the Art House unifies a working artist studio, concert hall, classroom, and everyday meeting ground where new relationships are forged. Our ideal is to wed the arts to everyday life, immersed in both the richness and the complexity of challenges inherent in our own community and the greater society at large.

A Season for Iran
Exhibition Opening of BĀZ-TĀB (Reflection)

We are honored to present BĀZ-TĀB meaning reflection, an immersive performance + installation rooted in the architectural memory of Iran.

Through large-scale charcoal drawings, paper sculpture, sound, and spatial performance, the work reimagines dreamlike fragments of remembered places: courtyards, domes, wind towers, and intimate interiors of Iranian homes.

Centered around the symbolic courtyard and "howz" (pool), you’re invited to step into a living memory-space shaped by longing, displacement, and return.
"BĀZ-TĀB" is not just an artwork, it’s a collective act of remembering the spaces, sounds, and emotions that stay with us across distance.

Throughout the evening, and will serenade us with songs echoing tenderness, longing, and resilience carried through memory.

Featuring:
Sima Shahverdi — Visual artist & vocalist

Guest artist:
Nima Farzaneh — Piano

A SEASON FOR IRAN

Presenting Iranian Art in a Time of Profound Grief, Resilience, and Urgency

A Season for Iran is an ongoing series dedicated to amplifying the voices of Iranian artists in a time of profound grief, resilience, and urgency. In the wake of the brutal crackdown on protesters in Iran on January 8th and 9th, and the recent violence and war that have left people living under both oppression and bombardment, this series creates a space for solidarity through culture. Through art, music, storytelling, and poetry, we gather to honor the endurance of the Iranian people and the power of artistic expression to sustain memory, empathy, and collective strength.

We began this series with our Mission Art Performance Project (MAPP) event, Echoes of Stolen Lives, on February 7th, and continued with Nowruz: Echoes of Solidarity on March 29th. Over the next two weeks, the season continues with the opening of BĀZ-TĀB (Reflection) exhibition on Sunday, April 19th, followed by a performance by Kamân Duo on April 25th.

In Iran, art has long been a language of resistance, survival, and human connection. Through this season, we invite our community to come together in witness, reflection, and shared humanity.

This Saturday at Red Poppy Art House

IAN MAKSIN — “Songs of Love & Peace” New Album Tour

Join us for an intimate evening with world-acclaimed one-man cello orchestra and multilingual vocalist Ian Maksin.

With layered cello, loop pedal, and electronics, Ian transforms a single instrument into an expansive orchestra — weaving traditional songs from Armenia, Iran, medieval Spain and France, and beyond into a rich, immersive tapestry of sound.

His newest album reflects a life of global exploration — touring across continents, collaborating with musicians around the world, and following the quiet thread that connects cultures through music.

Alongside selections from Songs of Love & Peace, Ian will share works from The Alchemist, Amor Renatus, and pieces from his vast repertoire of over 300 songs in 43 languages.

An evening of depth, presence, and musical storytelling awaits.

Join us tomorrow night for Sudamericanto — blending jazz with Latin-American, Caribbean, and Brazilian rhythms.

Sudamericanto’s unique brand of Latin-American music combines Brazilian jazz with South and Central American folk rhythms, taking audiences on a journey through traditions from South America and the Caribbean with a Brazilian jazz twist.

Featuring multi-faceted Puerto Rican vocalist/interpreter Madeleine Zayas, and high-caliber Bay Area musicians and educators, Marcos Silva (keyboard, arrangements), Michaelle Goerlitz (percussion), and David Pinto (bass, arrangements), the ensemble performs fresh compositions of Brazilian jazz tunes and original arrangements of Latin classics from Argentina, Chile, Perú, Venezuela, Mexico, Cuba, and Puerto Rico.

Sudamericanto draws from sounds rooted in the traditions of afroperuvian landó, zamacueca, Brazilian samba, Puerto Rican bomba and guaracha, joropo venezolano, son cubano, and boleros, all tied together with rhythmic precision and jazzy flavors.

On December 28, 2025, millions of Iranians took to the streets demanding dignity, freedom, and an end to decades of repression. In response, the Islamic Republic of Iran launched one of the deadliest crackdowns in its history.

Tens of thousands were killed—many shot at close range. Children, women, and young people were among the dead. Thousands more were blinded, injured, or disappeared into prisons.

All of this unfolded under a nationwide internet blackout that continues to this day, plunging the country into digital darkness—cutting off communication, erasing evidence, and preventing people from seeking help.

Families grieve. Communities endure. And yet, their courage echoes.

To honor the lives stolen and to stand in solidarity with the people of Iran, MAPP (Mission Art Performance Project) brings together eight artists from Iranian, Kurdish, Armenian, and Arab backgrounds. Through music, reflection, and shared witness, we mourn, remember, and amplify voices that authoritarian regimes work relentlessly to silence.

Join us for an evening of remembrance, resistance, and hope.

Ghosts of the River — Film Screening and Artist Talk

Join us for a special screening of Ghosts of the River (2009), presented by ShadowLight Productions and written by Octavio Solis. This cinematic shadow theater film explores ghost stories from the U.S.–Mexico borderlands, blending shadow puppetry, live actors, and projected imagery into a dreamlike visual language.

Inspired by the testimonies of people living and crossing along the Rio Grande, Ghosts of the River captures the layered artistry of light, shadow, and story.

After the screening, stay for an artist talk and Q&A with Larry Reed and original collaborators, including lead shadow designer I Made Moja, puppeteers, and shadow actors.
