San Francisco - Barcelona Memorandum of Understanding Between The Cities of San Francisco and Barcelona 1. The Agreement shall remain in force for five years.
10.1.

The Historical ties between San Francisco and Barcelona predate the American Revolution. The parties shall take steps to promote greater popular awareness of their shared past.

2. A demonstrated commitment to the extension of equality and civil rights for all people are values that are reflected in the political and popular sentiment of each city. The parties commit to work toward sharing strateg

ies with the aim of maintaining and improving the tolerant, progressive, and inclusive atmosphere for which both cities enjoy positive international renown.

3. San Francisco and Barcelona both strive to implement sensible and sustainable transportation policy in their roles as regional transit centres. The parties commit to facilitating cooperative exchange in the areas of high-speed rail deployment and the successful development of infrastructure commensurate with a regional hub.

4. The parties shall support the sharing of municipal urban planning strategy with particular regard to the development of airport and seaport infrastructure and tourism.

5. San Francisco and Barcelona are regional centres for cutting, edge high-tech, biotech, and clean-tech development. The parties shall undertake measures to further facilitate technological, scientific and venture capital exchanges with regard to the knowledge-based economy and ICT.

6. San Francisco and Barcelona both strive to implement e-Government services and Smart City projects. The parties commit themselves to work towards sharing strategies and knowledge in this field.

7. The parties shall support the establishment and expansion of formal accords between institutions of higher learning in order to facilitate the exchange of students, academics , and professionals from the medical-science and other academic communities.

8. The parties shall support the strengthening of links between San Francisco and Barcelona based financial and media institutions.

9. The celebration and patronage of the arts in San Francisco and Barcelona has nurtured a vibrant cultural life in both cities. The parties shall support intellectual and material exchange between the two cities with respect to culture, the performing arts, and fine art.

10. The Agreement may be extended for a consecutive five year period with the written consent of both hereto undersigned parties.
10.2. The parties may agree to extend the Agreement for further five year periods in perpetuity with the written consent both undersigned parties.
10.3. The Agreement may be amended or terminated at any time with the written consent of both undersigned parties.
