In LA, 44% of unhoused women reported domestic violence as the primary cause of their homelessness.

It's clear: Housing access and domestic violence are linked, and we can't solve one without addressing the other.

Aaron Schrank's reporting for LA Public Press shows how strong journalism can shine a light on interconnected issues and their solutions — while centering the voices of those impacted.

Though is coming to a close, the Journalist Playbook is available year round. Find solution-based reporting resources that can help end domestic violence https://journalists.letsenddv.org/

Rossana Drumond, publisher of News, knows that covering domestic violence is different from covering any other kind of news. It requires unique sensitivity and willingness to explore root causes.

By examining interconnected issues in their coverage — like immigration status, language barriers, and cultural norms — journalists can share how issues reinforce each other and encourage more comprehensive solutions.

In the Journalist Playbook, find research on related topics, plus expert sources who can help you dig deeper.

Solution-based domestic violence reporting doesn't just focus on one issue.

People experiencing domestic violence are often impacted by a loss of job, homelessness, and immigration status. By exploring how these issues are interconnected — and impacted by changing public funding — reporters can drive systemic change.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we’ll be celebrating the journalists and newsrooms dedicated to trauma-informed, solution-based reporting.

The stories journalists tell about domestic violence can have a profound effect on how we talk about it, think about it, and work to end it.

Stories that center survivor voices, protect sources, examine systems and interconnected issues, and share solutions can promote progress and change.

Although is coming to an end, we continue celebrating Black leadership that is reshaping philanthropy. One of those trailblazers is Janiece Evans-Page, CEO of the Tides Foundation ().

As Janiece puts it: “We’re committed to uplifting and supporting those doing the work on the front lines. More than ever, we’re intentional about ensuring their voices are heard—amplifying their impact while also protecting them and the communities they serve.”

This is what philanthropy should look like—centering those most affected, shifting power, and creating real pathways for healing and justice. Read the entire conversation Shikiri Hightower-Gaskin had with Janiece (link in below), and let’s continue to uplift Black changemakers and invest in the visionaries who are shaping our collective future.

We're so excited for the "Healing California" Ethnic Media Collaborative! Supporting ethnic media is especially important now and this collaboration will amplify important community voices and stories. Stay connected with us this year to see this work in action!

The Center has launched the 2025 Ethnic Media Collaborative, “Healing California,” bringing together eight California outlets serving diverse audiences. El Tecolote, Telemundo 52 Los Angeles, Telemundo 48, Telemundo 33, Sacramento Observer, The Stoop, World Journal, and Người Viet News. The Center will partner with ethnic media organizations in California to report together on health equity, community well-being and gaps in health care. The initiative is made possible thanks to the generous support of Blue Shield of California Foundation, The California Endowment, The California Wellness Foundation and the California Health Care Foundation. As we close out , we’re excited to highlight the incredible work of Mujeres Unidas y Activas (MUA) — an organization transforming lives and empowering immigrant women in Alameda and San Francisco counties.

Mujeres Unidas y Activas is part of a multigenerational cohort working to end domestic violence, focusing on root causes and protective factors unique to families of color. This approach is powerful because it’s grounded in the lived experiences of survivors, building a future where women lead with strength, survivors heal with dignity, and families thrive across generations.

Thank you, MUA, for leading the way toward a safer, more just future. Let’s keep showing up for the Latinx community—this month and every day.
