Empowering Chinatown’s Seniors with SF Trash Talk: Learning About Our City’s Waste

Cameron House hosted “SF Trash Talk 三藩市城市垃圾問題!” , a community educational workshop focused on one of San Francisco’s most talked-about issues: trash and waste in our city. We were honored to have Vincent Yuen and Jessica Li from Refuse Refuse SF as our guest speakers. Through their slide presentation, they guided us through: What is the problem in SF? Why is it so important? What solutions exist? What can each of us do? Many participants shared that they learned a lot and plan to put these practices into action in the future.

When we give seniors opportunities to learn, we empower them to stay connected, informed, and engaged in the community. By teaching seniors about proper trash disposal and keeping our neighborhoods clean, we are not only supporting healthier, cleaner lives for our seniors—we are also helping make San Francisco a cleaner and more welcoming city for everyone.

Your donation can help Cameron House provide more educational workshops and meaningful learning opportunities for seniors.

Every contribution helps us create more opportunities for seniors to learn, connect, and make a positive impact in their community. Help provide more educational workshops for seniors today

We Have an Attitude of Gratitude…FOR YOU!

Community in Action!

Twenty volunteers from Google’s Asians in Marketing Employee Resource Group spent their lunch break giving back to the community!

Together, they purchased items from the Asian Women’s Shelter’s priority needs list and assembled 50 activity kits in Culbertson Hall filled with crayons, coloring sheets, LEGO sets, and other fun items. Each kit included a handwritten note of love and support. 💌

The volunteers also took a tour of Cameron House and learned more about our community, culture, and history.

Asian Women’s Shelter’s Truc commended the effort and collaboration, saying that the items provided were thoughtful and very useful for their shelter residents. Thank you, to the Google volunteers for spending their time creating something thoughtful and meaningful for local families.

Want to make a difference in your community? Consider volunteering with Cameron House! 💛

Our Chinese Cancer Support Group recently came together for a special bilingual art workshop with UCSF Art for Recovery. 💛

Led by Jun Jun Li, participants created bamboo ink paintings while enjoying time together, sharing encouragement, and expressing themselves through art.

The goal wasn’t to create a “perfect” painting. It was to relax, be present, and enjoy creating together.

At one point, a participant looked at her painting and said, “It doesn’t look like bamboo at all. Why can’t I paint it well?”

Another participant responded, “If you believe that it is bamboo, then it is bamboo. What matters is you, not what others think. Let’s just enjoy the moment.”

That simple exchange captured the heart of the workshop: art doesn’t have to be perfect to have meaning. Participants were encouraged to trust their own creativity and let go of worrying about how others might see their work.

At the end, everyone placed their paintings together. Each painting was different, but together they created something beautiful—just like the community itself. 🌿

Some participants even noticed that their paintings looked different when viewed from a distance:

“When I looked closely at my own painting, I thought it didn’t look very good. But now that I see it from far away, it looks much better. It looks more complete!”

Sometimes, stepping back helps us see the bigger picture. And sometimes, creating something together is what makes it beautiful. 💛

The workshop was made possible through the support and connection of Ms. Donna Lau, whose involvement with cancer support and connection to UCSF Art for Recovery helped open the door for Cameron House to explore this bilingual art workshop. Ms. Lau also joined us in bringing a warm and positive presence to the group, sharing her perspective on living in the moment and noticing the small moments of beauty around us.

The workshop was facilitated by Jun Jun Li, a facilitator with UCSF Art for Recovery team. Jun Jun guided participants through the bamboo painting activity and created a warm, welcoming space where everyone could explore art at their own pace.

☀️ What an amazing summer at Cameron House!

We recently wrapped up our Summer Adventures Program with a joyful Summer Showcase celebrating everything our students learned and accomplished. From student-written skits and Kung Fu to Ribbon Dance and Dragon Dance, our students brought so much energy to the stage! 🎭🐉

But the best part of summer happened beyond the stage. Students built academic skills, explored AI, learned practical life skills, went on field trips, camped overnight, made new friends, and grew in confidence and independence.

Most importantly, they found a place where they felt safe, welcomed, and connected. 💛

Your support helps make experiences like these possible. Donate today to help Cameron House create more opportunities for young people to learn, grow, and belong.

This October, Cameron House is launching a small mentorship pilot connecting emerging professionals with experienced mentors who can offer career guidance, encouragement, and practical insight.

We’re seeking mentors who can commit to:
✨Meeting with one mentee four to five times
✨Approximately one hour per session
✨Sharing professional experience, guidance, and support
✨Completing a short feedback survey afterward

Meetings may take place virtually and will be scheduled at mutually convenient times. While we hope most sessions will occur in October, pairs will have flexibility if scheduling requires some meetings to happen later.
Because this is a small pilot, not every mentor who applies will necessarily be matched. We will only create matches when there is meaningful alignment between a mentor’s experience and preferences and a mentee’s goals.

Apply to become a mentor by September 21!
Mentors will hear about their match by September 25.
Matched pairs will be introduced by September 28.
Interested in helping an emerging professional navigate their next chapter?
