A PUBLIC EVENT!

Join us for the third event in the popular Women Empowering Women series: Creating Financial Abundance! The evening focuses on fiscal management, budgeting, investment strategies, and resources so women in the arts can take charge of their financial futures and build a foundation for long-term security and wealth.

We’ll hear from
· REGINA TSAI - Schwab Certified Financial Planner and Wealth Strategist
· SHEILA CUNNINGHAM - executive coach, teacher and workshop trainer
· VICTORIA VEEDELL - San Francisco-based landscape painter
Our moderator will be Debra Reabock, a San Francisco-based abstract photographer and Outreach chair for the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art.

The Women Empowering Women series was created by NCWCA (Northern California Women Caucus for Art) presented at the Commonwealth Club. This is a series encouraging women and their supporters to embrace challenges and create pathways for achievement.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Laura Abrams, President.

Laura Abrams joined NCWCA in 2020, where her skills in arts management have served her roles as Professional Development Chair and now as President. She studied art history at UCLA, then arts management at NYU, where she had to choose between visual and performing arts. The stage took the lead, and Laura spent 30+ years traveling the world through great performances of dance, music, and theater as Cal Performances' Education Director, producing multifaceted campus and community programs. Making art is now a priority! She works on a small scale, creating layered works in stained glass, assemblage, and collage, with concurrent experiments in figure and plein air pastel drawing. NCWCA’s Art Tag is a constant source of inspiration.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Marguerite Elliot, Vice President.

Marguerite Elliot is a sculptor whose large-scale public works explore environmental fragility and the urgent call to protect our world. A founding member of the Feminist Studio Workshop and the Woman's Building in Los Angeles, she has championed women artists throughout her career. Her papers are archived at the Getty Research Institute, and her collaborative artist's book ‘Shovel Defense’ is in The Museum of Modern Art's collection. A dedicated NWCA Board member, she has served as Membership Chair and Vice President, and continues organizing Land Art Day, Board Retreats, and programs that strengthen and inspire our membership.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Karen M. Gutfreund, Board Secretary.

Karen M. Gutfreund is an independent curator, artist and the Northern/Central California Rep for TFAP (The Feminist Art Project). Her curatorial practice focuses on feminist and social justice art and she has created 45+ national exhibitions. She joined the Board of NCWCA as Secretary utilizing her skills from her “day job” career as an Executive Assistant—just call her Joan from “Mad Men.”

Karen believes in the power of art for positive change and has recently returned to creating her own mixed media, resin work. She lives in the Sierra Foothills outside of Yosemite and is training Asha, a new Husky/German Shepherd puppy to be a good studio partner.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Theresa Giammattei, Membership Chair.

Theresa Giammattei is a painter and mixed media artist in Los Gatos. She received a BFA in Painting from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst but has recently been incorporating printmaking and ceramics into her practice. Her work, often using tools as metaphors, highlights the quirkiness of the human condition while focusing on mental health and environmental concerns.

She currently serves on the NCWCA Board of Directors as Membership Chair and is a member of the Art Stars, Mentorship, and Strategy Committees. She started and hosts the Art Crit Program which invites local female Art Professionals to formally critique the works of NCWCA members.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Sandra Yagi, Board Treasurer.

Sandra Yagi is a painter in San Francisco. Her work in drawing and oil painting explores themes such as mortality, human experience and our impact on the natural world.

Yagi was raised in suburban Denver, Colorado. She earned her MBA, and worked for 27 years at major financial institutions. However, due to the pent-up need to create, she took up drawing and painting while still working in finance. She painted part time, until she left corporate life behind in 2008 and became a full time artist. She uses her business background while serving as NCWCA’s Treasurer.

Yagi, with her partner Jude, also volunteers at SF SPCA, with their certified therapy cats, bringing joy to elderly people at assisted living facilities. Her cat Nimbus has attained viral internet stardom on Instagram () by performing amazing tricks not normally done by felines.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Chandrika Marla, Board Director.

Chandrika Marla is a visual artist who, after a successful career in fashion, committed to painting full time, developing a practice rooted in abstraction to examine emotional and psychological space.

Chandrika serves as a Director on the Board, and founded the NCWCA South Bay Pod, an offshoot for members who want to socialize, network and experience art in the South Bay. She also manages NCWCA’s social media presence, and is passionate about creating opportunities for members to meet in person to foster a vibrant, supportive sisterhood of women artists.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Catherine Sherman, Board Director.

When Catherine moved to San Francisco in 2005 with her husband and four sons, she began her winding but steady journey toward a full time career as artist, advocate and community cultural worker. She joined NCWCA in 2021 when she discovered their commitment to professional development and community opportunities for women artists at all stages. She has participated in NCWCA exhibits, member exhibition tours, Art Tag, Land Art Day, and the Funk and Feminism Seminar at DiRosa Gallery. Catherine joined the Board this July as a Director, and looks forward to supporting outreach, events, membership and partnerships.

MEET THE NCWCA BOARD: Susan Kirshenbaum, Professional Development Chair.

Susan R. Kirshenbaum is a visual artist and independent art curator. Raised as an artist in her family's art school in Pittsburgh, PA, where she studied and worked, she became a creative director for branding and marketing before returning to full-time art making. Her art and curatorial work spring from her love of life drawing and photography, integrating topics close to her heart, including women, feminism, social justice, nature, and travel. Throughout her career Kirshenbaum has maintained an active role in local women's and arts organizations. She serves on the NCWCA Board of Directors as Chair of Professional Development. She is currently being presented with a solo art exhibition, "Thin Skin, Life's Layers", at Black & White Projects in SF.
