Today recognizes a somber reality that closely impacts our work, International Overdose Awareness Day. It is an opportunity to remember the lives lost to overdose, honor the grief of families and loved ones, challenge the stigma surrounding substance use, and recommit ourselves to preventing future deaths.

Here in San Francisco, the latest numbers offer both reason for hope and a reminder of how much work remains. According to preliminary data from the San Francisco Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, 296 people died from accidental drug overdoses between January and July 2026, compared with 412 during the same period in 2025—a 28% decrease.

In July, San Francisco recorded 34 accidental overdose deaths, the lowest monthly total since the City began tracking these deaths in 2020. Of those deaths, 28 involved fentanyl.

While this progress is significant, 296 lives lost are still 296 too many. Overdose prevention requires more than responding in moments of crisis. It requires accessible treatment, harm reduction, mental health care, stable housing, recovery support, and compassionate services that meet people where they are.

At PRC, we see every day that recovery and stability are possible when people have access to the right support. We've also seen brave employees use life saving techniques to save lives and reverse overdoses.

Long before their music became the soundtrack to dance floors around the world, Sylvester found a home in San Francisco.

Sylvester's iconic anthem, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real),” became a celebration of liberation, authenticity, and q***r joy. But his legacy extends far beyond music.

Before their death from complications of AIDS in 1988, Sylvester directed future royalties from their music to organizations supporting people affected by HIV/AIDS, including the AIDS Emergency Fund (AEF).

Founded in 1982, AEF provided direct financial assistance to people struggling to pay for housing, utilities, medical care, and other urgent needs during the height of the epidemic. Today, Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) continues to help low-income San Francisco residents living with HIV/AIDS address urgent expenses that threaten their health, housing, or stability.

In the past five years, just under $7 million has been provided to those in need.

In Sylvester's honor, PRC named our annual gala Mighty Real after the song that continues to inspire generations. On October 2, 2026, Mighty Real will celebrate the legacy of the people and acts of compassion that brought us here, while looking boldly toward what comes next. The evening will also mark a defining moment in our history as we reveal the next chapter of our organization’s story. You won’t want to miss it.

Today, we celebrate the birthday of Marsha P. (“Pay It No Mind”) Johnson, one of the most prominent figures of the gay rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s in New York City.

Despite living much of her life on the margins, Marsha was known for her incredible generosity, often offering up what little she had whenever someone admired something or she felt they needed it more. But perhaps one of the greatest gifts she shared with the world was her endearing smile, which continues to shine brightly in every image she left behind.

Happy Birthday, Mother Marsha. Your light, love, and legacy continue to inspire us.

San Francisco has a deep and rich history of transgender activism. In honor of Transgender History Month, we're highlighting the Compton's Cafeteria Riot.

On an August evening in 1966, three years before the Stonewall uprising in New York City, patrons of Compton's Cafeteria at Taylor and Turk Streets in San Francisco's Tenderloin district fought back against years of police harassment. The confrontation began when a transgender woman resisted arrest by throwing a cup of coffee at a police officer, sparking what is now recognized as the first collective uprising by the LGBTQ+ community against police brutality.

While many details of that historic night have been lost over time, we are fortunate that some of the transgender women who were there are still with us to share their firsthand experiences.

To learn more about this remarkable chapter in San Francisco's history, check out Compton's Cafeteria Riot, an immersive stage production playing in San Francisco through September. Featuring a revolving cast of talented local performers, the show brings this powerful story to life for a new generation.
