San Francisco Aid for Animals (SFAfA) was founded in 2011 by four San Francisco veterinarians who were alarmed by the number of pets being euthanized or surrendered due to their owner’s inability to pay for veterinary care. In 2012, after raising money through donations, they began providing grants to San Francisco area veterinarians to help pet guardians pay for their pet’s urgent, treatable medi

Meet Luna! She is a 3 year old Toy Poodle that needed cataract surgery which is uncommon for a little pup this young. She was not adjusting to her vision loss well and her future quality of life was compromised. The surgery was a success, which reduced the chance of secondary ocular problems and she has regained her vision!

Canelo’s dad rushed him to the emergency center, where the staff stabilized him and started his treatment.

The sweet pup had deep puncture wounds all over his neck and throat and severe swelling. He was at risk for necrosis, a deadly condition where flesh dies from the inside out due to lack of blood flow.

He needed more help and that’s when he came to Fix Our Ferals. The team got to work right away. It took multiple surgeries and nine visits total, but it was worth it. Canelo survived, and is thricing!

A few months on, Canelo accompanied his dad to help the clinic with some carpentry work on-site. They repaired the clinic's gate and built an urgently needed fence. How sweet of Canelo to give back to the clinic that helped him! We are so happy to see Canelo back to his normal self!

Two cats sat huddled in a pet store cage. They had just lost their home after their owner moved to a nursing facility. Fortunately, a family came in and adopted the 6-year-old cats, won over by their loving nature. Mona and Meeka became part of the family, nudging hands for affection and sunbathing in the window. Some seven years later, they noticed Mona had a loose tooth fragment, causing her discomfort when eating.

At the Peninsula Avenue Veterinary Clinic, they discovered the senior cat had a broken tooth and issues with two premolars. Fortunately, a grant from San Francisco Aid for Animals provided the funding and Dr. Linda Hall donated her services for the balance. After the procedure, Mona was back to her mellow, sweet nature, much to the relief of her family!

Mona, a tiny pup full of life, suddenly became very sick—what started as mild symptoms quickly turned into a life-threatening condition.

After multiple emergency visits and a critical diagnosis, she needed urgent surgery her family couldn’t afford.

Thanks to life-saving support, Mona got the care she needed—and today, she’s back to her playful, loving self.

Stories like hers are why this work matters. ❤️
