San Francisco Aid for Animals (SFAfA) was founded in 2011 by four San Francisco veterinarians who were alarmed by the number of pets being euthanized or surrendered due to their owner’s inability to pay for veterinary care. In 2012, after raising money through donations, they began providing grants to San Francisco area veterinarians to help pet guardians pay for their pet’s urgent, treatable medical conditions. SFAfA is fiscally sponsored by the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Inquiring Systems Inc. Donations can be made via our website: www.sfafa.org

When Tsuki wasn't feeling like herself, her family grew increasingly worried. For nearly a month, she had been vomiting on and off and eating very little. Over the last few days, she stopped eating altogether, and it became clear that something was seriously wrong. Her family took her to vet emergency group and it was discovered that Tsuki had multiple rubber balls lodged in her small intestines, causing a dangerous intestinal blockage. She underwent emergency exploratory surgery, where the veterinary team successfully removed the foreign objects and gave her the chance to recover!

Kai came into his family’s life unexpectedly. They weren’t even looking for another dog when they visited the shelter, but one look at his adorable black lab face and they knew it was fate. Over the years, Kai has been there through life’s biggest moments — his parents’ wedding, moving homes, and welcoming two children into the family. Known for his loving personality, Kai greets everyone he meets with joy and affection. After being diagnosed with a fracture of his proximal left femur, Kai underwent a successful leg amputation. Today, he continues to thrive, showing the same resilient and loving spirit his family has cherished from the very beginning.

Lady, a pitbull mix, had her world change in an instant after she was involved in a serious car accident with her owner. While first responders rushed her owner to the hospital for treatment, Lady was brought to VCA for emergency care. The team assessed her injuries, provided pain management, and stabilized her condition. They did find that Lady had suffered a fractured femur. Although severe, they still had hope she would be okay. She was scheduled to receive an amputation through the Humane Society, giving her the opportunity to heal and enjoy a happy, pain-free future. For now, Lady is resting comfortably at home with pain medication while she waits for her surgery. Despite everything she has endured, her gentle spirit continues to shine through.

Just days before her 5th birthday, Melly, a Siberian Husky, swallowed a squeaky toy that became lodged in her small intestine. Thanks to emergency care at VEG Larkspur and funding from San Francisco Aid for Animals, Melly was able to have the toy safely removed. During the procedure, VEG also spayed Melly at no cost. She made a great recovery and was home in time to celebrate her 5th birthday with her family! Thanks to everyone who helped give Melly a second chance to celebrate her special day. ❤️

🐾 Meet Stitch! ❤️
Stitch found himself in a serious situation when bladder stones completely blocked his urethra, making it impossible for him to urinate normally. He needed emergency surgery to remove the stones and relieve the obstruction.
During the procedure, the veterinary team removed numerous small stones and flushed the bladder and urethra to make sure they were clear. Samples were also sent for testing to help determine what caused the stones.
Thankfully, Stitch received the care he needed and is on the road to recovery! 🐶💙

🐾 Meet Aslan! ❤️
At just 5 months old, this sweet Pittie puppy found himself in trouble after swallowing a sock! Aslan was brought in after vomiting and being unable to defecate, and he needed emergency surgery to remove the foreign object.
Thankfully, Aslan did wonderfully through surgery and is recovering well. His family is thrilled to have their playful, snack-loving puppy back—and they’ll definitely be keeping a closer eye on those socks! 🧦🐶💕

Arrow came to VEG Larkspur after developing itchy bumps and irritated skin. He was diagnosed with hot spots and pyoderma, a bacterial skin infection. Thankfully, his owner brought him in quickly, before the infection became more serious. With antibiotics, medication to reduce the itching, and topical treatment, Arrow is expected to make a full recovery within a week or two! Arrow was a true gentleman throughout his visit, and we’re so happy he’s on the road back to feeling like himself. 🐶💕

Socks got into trouble after swallowing a cat toy that became lodged in his esophagus. He needed surgery to make sure the foreign material was removed and that his digestive tract was clear.
Thankfully, the veterinary team found no additional foreign material in his stomach or intestines and successfully completed the procedure. Socks was able to begin his recovery with his family, ready to put his adventurous eating habits behind him! ❤️🐱

SFAfA’s Tea Party at the Zoo was everything we hoped it would be—and more! 🫖🐾

We’re so happy to hear how much our guests enjoyed the afternoon, from the lite-bites and tea, to the silent auction, animal encounters, and wonderful docent stations. We also loved hearing about your adventures around the Zoo and rides on the carousel! It truly was a delightful afternoon to remember.

At 12 years old, Sugar Cube arrived critically ill with a severe uterine infection called pyometra. She was weak, dehydrated, had not eaten in four days, and was at serious risk of sepsis. Emergency surgery was her only chance. Thankfully, her surgery was successful, and with intensive supportive care, Sugar Cube slowly began to improve. Over the following days, she became more alert, started drinking, walking, and exploring again. After fighting so hard, Sugar Cube was finally able to go home to continue her recovery. We’re so grateful she was given the chance to heal and get back to being a happy dog. ❤️🐶
