Co-directed by sisters Megan & Shannon Kurashige. San Francisco. An evening-length piece that will premiere at ODC Theater in San Francisco, October 23-26, 2014.

Sharp & Fine is a contemporary dance company creating narrative performances that combine exuberant choreography, emotionally nuanced text, live music, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Currently, Sharp & Fine is working on:

Project #4: A collaboration with trumpet player Theo Padouvas that will bring together a mixed cast of musicians and dancers to tell a story.

We wanted to share a few reasons why we love the work of Talk Story guest artist Chinchin Hsu 許晴晴.

We’ve admired chinchin as a dancer and a dancemaker for a long time. The way she moves through the world, as an artist and a human, making generous space for care and playfulness and family, is so inspiring.

We wanted to share a few reasons why we love the work of Talk Story guest artist Molly Rose-Williams.

Molly was the first artist we invited for this first round of Talk Story. We had seen a little bit of her work (an excerpt of the hilarious CRUSH and a work-in-progress sharing of a new piece) and were totally enamored, but felt shy about asking her to be part of Talk Story until our dear mutual friend Julie Crothers paved the way for us ❤️

2,400 years ago, a man wrote a play about a king named Agamemnon who sacrificed his daughter for the sake of a war. With IPHIGENIA, Sharp & Fine blends dance, theater, and live music to cut open Euripides’s tragedy and imagine how the woman at the center of it might eventually find her own voice and ask: What’s the point of sacrifice?

Some photos from our performance at ChoreoFest this past weekend. We shared a collage of excerpts from our upcoming show, adapted for the unique space of the Crepe Myrtle Garden. It was an interesting challenge to let go of the storytelling of the full show and lean into the visual drama (assisted by a very large piece of paper and some accommodating gusts of wind). Big thank you to Co-Curators David Herrera Performance Co. and PUSH for inviting us to be part of this year’s festival and much gratitude to Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and Yerba Buena Gardens for putting on such a wonderful and welcoming celebration of dance. 💚

Today’s rehearsal definitely required sunglasses. Charmaine and eric avery working on big paper drama for Sharp & Fine’s performance at the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival ChoreoFest. We’re sharing a collage of excerpts from our upcoming show alongside performances by Yeni Lucero & Dancers, BrasArte, and PUSH. This Saturday, 7/25, 2-4pm at Yerba Buena Gardens, San Francisco.

We are SO EXCITED about this! Since storytelling is such a big part of Sharp & Fine’s work, we’ve been wanting to make a space for dance makers and audiences who are curious about/delighted by/obsessed with storytelling and dance, and we’re finally making it happen. The lineup of guest artists for Talk Story #1 is so good! We can’t wait to share the first Talk Story with Babatunji Johnson, Chinchin Hsu 許晴晴, and Molly Rose-Williams. We think they’re making some of the most riveting, ambitious, and refreshingly earnest dance work happening now, and we can’t wait to nerd out with them.

We’re getting back to our Clytemnestra/Agamemnon duet after a few months of working on other scenes. We built this back in the fall, when we hadn’t yet figured out how our story was going to work, but knew there was something we wanted to explore about the rage and denial of these characters. It will be interesting to see how it emerges now, when we have so much story piled up behind it.
