An adaptation to an environment in which fires are regular, and in which post-fire environments offer the best germination and seedling survival rates.
We began the research for this choreographic material back in 2019, when I became interested in species of plants whose birth and growth processes have come to be reliant on
fire or smoke, and a larger theme
around wildfire and it's transformational, destructive, and potential energy.
One global pandemic later, with the scattering of many of our dancers across the country, our lives interrupted and rearranged, and after the birth of my daughter, we are finally bringing some of our movement research to performative life in the making of our first dance film. Everything has changed, and once again we find the subject of our research serendipitously and oddly poignant in our personal lives.
The creation process will continue to be slow. We’ve learned this past year to slow down and give ourselves time. We’ve learned from the trees to take the long view. Thank you for being here, on the journey, with us ✨
