I (Alexis) am so honored to share that I was selected for the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association's annual 40 Best LGBTQ+ Lawyers Under 40 list! This is a huge honor and my selection has made me very emotional, especially as my selection was directly due to my work with Identity Affirmation Workshop, which is my passion project. I will be traveling to Chicago in July to accept this award.

Each year, the LGBTQ+ Bar recognizes LGBTQ+ legal professionals (practicing lawyers, law professors, corporate counsel, members of the judiciary, politicians, etc.) under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves in their field and have demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBTQ+ equality.

Popping in for a National Coming Out Day post. I’ve come out so many times over the years, each organically, that I don’t think I have anything else to come out as. Of course, I won’t hold my breath; life is long and complicated and full of surprises. But for right now, I’m content.

I envision a world where coming out is merely informational, rather than a big emotional event. Or, even, a world where coming out is entirely unnecessary because gender and sexuality are broadly fluid and the world accepts people as individuals and not collectivities of identity-parts. But with 50+ countries still outlawing same-sex in*******se, the world broadly sliding farther into fascism with trans and q***r people largely in the crosshairs, and much of the world too dangerous to travel to purely because of the gender marker on my passport, even for me as a white, educated, male-bodied person with money, these dreams feel farther away than any time in recent memory.

But I maintain hope. Always. It’s almost trite at this point, but trans and q***r joy, success, compassion, and love are some of the most powerful tools available to us. If we lose hope, it feels like all is lost. But all is not lost, so long as we have each other’s backs, and so long as you all have our backs too.

Identity Affirmation Workshop is all systems go. Since the election, our new client requests are more than 10x what they normally are. We are rapidly expanding our capacity and trying to expand into other states. We are in need of donations to provide financial assistance to people who urgently need to update their names and gender markers before the new administration does whatever they’re going to do. If possible, please consider making a tax-deductible donation at

Identity Affirmation Workshop is based in the Castro District of San Francisco, California. We work to ensure that all trans, non-binary, two-spirit, third gender, and gender non-conforming people are able to legally change their names and/or gender markers to affirm their identity.
