The United Student Coalition is a coalition of immensely passionate young adults dedicated to ending educational inequity in the State of California. Our mission is to mobilize California college and graduate students as well as teachers to end the detriment of our higher education system in California and implement policies that will ensure that that detriment never happens again. Our vision is a
State where all college bound, undergraduate, and graduate students have access to a high-quality and low priced education through re prioritization of State funds and the establishment of inalienable rights given to all students. Our theory of change: The United Student Coalition organizes college and graduate students as wells as teachers on a grassroots level to support pro-student education legislation, policies, and propositions. Our core values stem from our three E’s:
Engage the academic community through political action;
Empower students to make change;
Enlighten students to the problems facing them today and how to fix them. As a result of these core values, the United Student Coalition believes that in order to change the status quo of higher education in California we must first change it on a policy level as well as grassroots mobilization. Our model: The United Student Coalition engages college students to create university-sponsored student groups/clubs that host campus awareness campaigns about the tuition increases, the need for a Student Bill of Rights, the creation of broad coalitions with cultural and social justice student groups, and advocate for state-level higher education policies that prioritize students first. Our chapters are entirely student-led and student-run on a volunteer basis. In particular, USC chapters help engage students who fill critical need areas for the reform movement, including under-represented minorities, first-generation college students, low-income students, and STEM majors. We are currently looking for program directors in southern California and Humboldt. Please email Nick Occhipinti at [email protected] about joining our team. We hope you will join us in making a difference!
