2026 IAS/Kress Lecture – Tuesday 26 May 2026 at 4pm CEST (10 am EST) with aperitivo reception to follow.

Dr. Roberts is a former IAS President and currently, Teaching Associate Professor in the School of Art at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Having extensively published early modern Italy and the Mediterranean, his current research looking at one of Bologna’s most important Renaissance masters Francesco Raibolini, known as “Francia.” It is this current research in which he will present at the IAS/Kress Lecture.

We invite you to attend the lecture in person with us in Bologna or on zoom.

This year, the IAS is also partnering with the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Storico Artistici to bring the 15th annual lecture to Bologna.

This event is free and open to the public.

The next event by .emergingscholars will be a roundtable conversation on applying to and succeeding in art history graduate programs.

Geared toward undergraduates and early career professionals interested in graduate school, the event will feature a panel of faculty members and graduate students in art history who will share their experiences and advice for applying to MA and PhD programs.

Participants include Dr. Holly Flora (Tulane University), Dr. Christopher Nygren (University of Pittsburgh), Emma Lyandres (IFA, NYU), and Katie Vogel (Syracuse University). A Q&A session will follow.

This event will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 6:00 PM EST.

IAS-Sponsored Sessions at the Sixteenth Century Society (SCS) Conference

Deadline for Submission to IAS:
8 April 2026

The IAS is seeking complete session proposals that address any issue
relevant to Italian art and architecture during the long sixteenth century. The Sixteenth Century Society (SCS)
was founded to promote scholarship on the early modern era (c.1450-1600), and actively encourages the
participation of international scholars as well as the integration of younger colleagues into the academic
community.

IAS members interested in submitting an organized panel or linked panels for sponsorship at SCS should
submit to IAS by 8 April:
- session title with brief abstract (250 words max.)
- list of confirmed speakers with affiliations, email addresses, and one-page CVs
- paper titles and abstracts (each 250 words max.)
- names of organizer(s) and chair(s) with email address(es), affiliation(s), and one-page CVs

Please review the SCS Submission Guidelines AND the IAS Submission Guidelines before submitting a
proposal.

Panel organizers must be members of the IAS to propose a session to the IAS Program Committee.

The Italian Art Society invites proposals for an IAS-sponsored session at the 115th College Art
Association Annual Conference in New York (3-6 February, 2027).

IAS members interested in organizing a panel addressing Italian art and architecture, please
submit a proposal with the following information:

-Abstract (250 words max)
-Session title
-Short list of potential or desired speakers
-Name of the chair(s) with email addresses and affiliation
-1-page CV
-5 CAA Fields of Study that best represent your proposal
-Indication if session is complete or one seeking contributions

We invite you to apply to be our 15th Annual IAS/Kress speaker. This year’s IAS/Kress lecture will take place on Tuesday 26 May 2026 at the University of Bologna.
Since 2010, the Italian Art Society has worked with the Samuel H. Kress Foundation on a lecture series to promote intellectual exchanges among art historians of North America and the international community of scholars living or working in Italy. This year, the IAS is also partnering with the Scuola di Specializzazione in Beni Storico Artistici to bring the lecture to Bologna.
Eligibility:
·      Senior or established scholars based in North America.
·      Topics must address Bologna or its environs, of any period up to the early 19th century.
·      Papers must not have been previously presented or published.
·      Speaker must be an active IAS member.

Please submit a cover letter, 250-500-word abstract, and current CV to lAS President and Executive Vice President (president[at]italianartsociety.org and vicepresident[at]italianartsociety.org).

We invite you to apply for the 3rd Annual IAS Premio Book Prize for 2026. This prize is for monographs (in Italian or English) with a publication date of 2025.

Deadline: Friday, April 3rd 2026

IAS membership required for year of application (2026) and award (2027). The award will be announced at the 2027 Annual Business Meeting during CAA 2027.

Application Materials: Submit a 1) 1-page cover letter outlining the contributions of the project to Italianist art history and 2) pdf of the publication to president[at]italianartsociety.org and vicepresident[at]italianartsociety.org by April 3.

We’re excited to announce the winner of the second annual Premio Book Prize is Ara H. Merjian’s “Fragments of Totality: Futurism, Fascism, and the Sculptural Avant-Garde” (2024, )
The submissions were particularly strong this year. In addition to Merjian’s win, the committee wanted to recognize three runners up for their excellent books: (in no particular order) Morten Steen Hansen “Subversive Painting: Giovanni da San Giovanni and His Circle in Seventeenth-Century Florence (Edizioni Quasar, 2024); Theresa L. Flanigan “The Ponte Vecchio: Architecture, Politics, and Civic Identity in Late Medieval Florence (Harvey Miller, 2024) ; and Cathleen Hoeniger “The Fate of Early Italian Art during World War II: Protection, Rescue, Restoration (Turnhout, 2024).
