Congratulations to Thea Musgrave on the world premiere of her new bassoon concerto, Out of the Darkness, at the BBC Proms!

When bassoonist Amy Harman told Musgrave that she could walk while playing, the composer replied, “You’ll be sorry you told me this!”

Sure enough, Musgrave put her to work. Throughout the concerto, Harman moves among the orchestra as the music travels from sadness toward hope. At 98, Musgrave is still finding new ways to bring music and drama together.

This September, experience her opera Mary, Queen of Scots, opening September 20 at the War Memorial Opera House.

Just 18 years old, and already the Queen of France, Mary Stuart is poised, politically savvy, and confident in her divine claim to the Scottish throne. However, the Scotland she returns to bears little resemblance to the one she left behind as a child, and she will need every ounce of resolve to hold onto her crown.

Composer Thea Musgrave brings one of history’s most captivating figures to the stage with a score as bold and compelling as its heroine.

Heidi Stober stars in Mary, Queen of Scots, on stage September 20–October 4.

Our team recently traveled to Edinburgh for the world premiere of The Galloping Cure, coming to San Francisco Opera in fall 2027. While we were there, we couldn’t resist doing a little sightseeing. 👀

Naturally, that included a visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, once home to the real Mary, Queen of Scots.

Thea Musgrave’s Mary, Queen of Scots opens September 20 at the War Memorial Opera House. 👑
