With the Company premiere of Strauss’ Elektra scheduled for 1938, San Francisco Opera founder Gaetano Merola had a problem: the War Memorial Opera House pit had been built to accommodate around 70–80 musicians for Verdi and Wagner operas—not the nearly 100 instrumentalists Strauss calls for in Elektra.

The solution? The “Elektra-fication” of the pit, including the addition of a narrow, four-foot-wide enclosure beneath the stage.

That space is affectionately called the “Torpedo Room” for its resemblance to the inside of a submarine.

⚡️ Elektra is onstage through June 27

“SFO once again demonstrated its Midas touch by introducing great singers to SF (and US) audiences. With a warm, velvety sound, a well-supported core, and an ease of delivery even in the most difficult coloratura passages, [Maria Kataeva] was a force to be reckoned with, truly a scene-stealer every time she appeared.”

Rossini’s The Barber of Seville runs through June 21.

Mezzo-soprano Buffy Baggott is a tenured member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus and has been performing on the War Memorial Opera House stage since 2008. She is immensely proud to perform with a company that reflects the local community and is a welcoming, open space for everyone.

San Francisco Opera is a company of the people and especially of our local Bay Area community. We are proud to produce works like The Monkey King and the return of Dead Man Walking that resonate deeply with our audiences. As Buffy says, "Opera donors are the linchpin in what we do," and it is your generosity that makes this all possible.

Your gift, no matter how small, helps support this legacy. Thanks to a generous challenge grant from the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation for the Arts, all gifts made by July 31 will be matched 1:1!
