LABOR AND COMMUNITY RALLY FOR HISTORIC BUILDING
The Redstone Labor Temple, also known as The Redstone Building, is a hub for social and economic justice organizing, a laboratory for radical arts and culture, the home of an important advocacy group for transgender Latinas, and a declared sanctuary building. It is an important part of the life of San Francisco’s radical culture which needs to be preserved.
The Mission Economic Development Agency (MEDA), a Mission district non-profit dedicated to fighting displacement of the neighborhood’s long-time residents and organizations, is in contract to purchase the building from the current owner. To do so, MEDA needs significant financial help from the City government and other sources. It is now seeking commitments of additional funding which is needed for the purchase.
Supporters of the building, led by the Redstone Labor Temple Association, the building’s tenants group, are rallying on Thursday, June 20, to call for financial help from city government, foundations, and philanthropists. At 11:30 am, community members will march from the Redstone building (at 2940 16th Street, near Capp Street) to City Hall. There will then be a rally on the Civic Center-side steps of San Francisco's City Hall from 12 noon to 1 p.m.
Built by the San Francisco Labor Council in 1914, the building was the epicenter of the historic 1934 San Francisco General Strike. The City designated it as a landmark in 2004.
Supervisor Hillary Ronen, along with Supervisors Shamann Walton and Gordon Mar, sponsored a resolution passed by the Board of Supervisors at its Tuesday meeting which pledged to support for efforts to preserve the building and prevent the eviction of its tenants.
"The Redstone Building is a city landmark celebrating the powerful history of San Francisco labor Struggles. But no less than that, it is a present-day gem that houses nonprofits, cultural institutions, and Legacy Businesses," said Supervisor Ronen. "I am so sick of the nonstop displacement of the heart and soul of my district. I am impressed by the Redstone tenants’ determination and their creativity to save this precious Mission resource, and I am ready to do whatever I can to support them in this struggle."
