Happy Filipino American History Month! Although Filipino American History Month is in October, the California Legislature recognized it early this summer so we could honor our community on the Assembly Floor.

It was a humbling experience to be in community and collectively witness Assemblymember Jessica Caloza present ๐‘ฏ๐’๐’–๐’”๐’† ๐‘น๐’†๐’”๐’๐’๐’–๐’•๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ recognizing ๐‘ญ๐’Š๐’๐’Š๐’‘๐’Š๐’๐’ ๐‘จ๐’Ž๐’†๐’“๐’Š๐’„๐’‚๐’ ๐‘ฏ๐’Š๐’”๐’•๐’๐’“๐’š ๐‘ด๐’๐’๐’•๐’‰ โค๏ธ. Last weekend was a mix of work, community service, & special time. First stop was Echo Park (soon to be renamed the Carlos Bulosan Library!) where we were invited to share about Filipino Family Health Initiative & learn about Old Manila at the Carlos Bulosan Book Club! We were able to visit the largest collection of Filipino adult and childrenโ€™s books in LA County Library and I read an excerpt from a book by author Carlene Bonnivier ( while sitting right next to her!) Joselyn Geaga-Rosenthal for the invitation & your leadership advocating for representation of our community! ๐Ÿ’›Second stop: sofiajoo shared with younger Girl Scouts a behind the scenes look of her Gold Award project focused on Youth Mental Health. She shared videos she made that highlighted FFHI parent testimonials & advice from teens on how to promote mental health. Special thanks to the troop leaders for the invitation to present. โค๏ธThird Stop: watched an early screening of Forgotten Island Movie with family - it was amazing to see our culture represented on the big screen in a beautiful movie about friendship. ๐Ÿ’œ

Thank you to the The Lotus Project for inviting FFHI to your incredible workshop that highlighted youth/young adult voices! I was grateful to have the opportunity to share our story as a keynote speaker which included how my UCLA undergrad years shaped me into the person I am today. This was also my first visit to the UCLA University Club & the first time I met our FFHI intern alum Dr. Jared Duldalao in person. Special thanks to Kendall Dimson & Nikki Catangay for attending the event and helping us spread the word about FFFI including our upcoming event on Sept 21 in Long Beach. It was also nice to see so many familiar faces & meet new mental heath advocates.

Our team had an amazing time at Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture FPAC last Saturday. We loved connecting with families, checking out Filipino small businesses and vendors, and just being in community with one another! Maraming salamat to everyone who stopped by!

Humbled for the invitation to be a featured keynote speaker at this workshop on September 17 & learning from other AAAI community leaders- especially the youth leaders who will be sharing their stories. Thank you Peter Gee, Angela Tang, RAMS, Inc., Tooru Nemoto, Dr. Dorothy Chin, and all the workshop collaborators who came together to plan this event.

GIven the greater Los Angeles (LA) area is home to the largest Asian American communities in the United States (over 2.2 million), I jumped at the chance to return to UCLA, my alma mater & share the story behind the Filipino Family Health Initiative. Join us!

About the Lotus Project:
The Lotus Project is a Center for Asian American & Asian Immigrant (AAAI) Child Trauma-Informed Care & Prevention that provides workshops, webinars, technical assistance, and resources to mental health service providers, community health workers, school staff, and other professionals who work with AAAI children and families affected by traumatic events and stress. Funded by the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the Lotus Project is a collaboration between the Public Health Institute (PHI) in Oakland and Richmond Area Multi-Services (RAMS) in the San Francisco Bay Area.
