A community center for the City's Tenderloin, Mid-Market, and Sixth Street Corridor neighborhoods

Hospitality House was founded in Spring 1967 as the Tenderloin neighborhood was emerging as a safe haven for thousands of LGBT youth fleeing oppressive homes and communities, seeking acceptance and belonging. San Francisco had little community-based capacity to support ever-increasing numbers of impoverished youth, even as the burgeoning gay rights movement had key watershed events the City’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Concerned community volunteers decided to start Central City Hospitality House, beginning with a simple drop-in space offering safe refuge for homeless youth. As poverty and homelessness emerged as national crises, Hospitality House strengthened its response, and evolved into full-fledged anchor institution serving low-income residents, both housed and unhoused, with a commitment to social change. Today, Hospitality House operates six programs at four locations in three core communities, and serves community residents struggling with poverty, homelessness and other barriers that limit opportunity and self-determination.

Dear Friends, Supporters, Allies & Sixth Street Community -

The fight to keep our Sixth Street Center from closing continues.
Because of you, there is hope...

Eight weeks ago, we were feeling alone, dispirited, trying not to give up. But we felt time was running out.

We turned to you to join us in this struggle. To answer our call for help. To give us reason to believe.
You made phone calls. You wrote letters, made signs. You marched with us on Sixth Street. More than 400 people signed our online petition to Save Our Sixth Street Center (SOS). You answered the call.

You gave us hope.

This week’s Rally & Speak Out at City Hall inspired us even more. Residents, supporters, allies, community groups showed up. Old friends and new friends. Heartfelt personal stories and soaring poetry lifted our spirits. We felt the love.

Yesterday, the Mayor’s office and Department of Public Health reached out to us.They are willing to meet with us, to discuss possible alternatives. No promises. No guarantees.
Still a long way to go.

But, because of you, there is hope...The struggle continues.

📣 SAVE OUR SIXTH STREET — RALLY AT CITY HALL

On Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Hospitality House is taking our fight to the steps of San Francisco City Hall.

For years, the Sixth Street Self-Help Center has been more than a building. It is a place where people experiencing homelessness, poverty, behavioral health challenges, and isolation can walk through the door and be met with dignity, compassion, and community.

Sixth Street provides low-barrier access to peer support, case management, behavioral health resources, housing and employment referrals, therapy and support groups, basic needs, and—just as importantly—a place where people know they belong.

We are asking our community to stand with us.

Join Hospitality House staff, community members, neighborhood partners, supporters, and advocates on the steps of City Hall as we call attention to what the closure of Sixth Street would mean for the people who rely on it.

Our neighbors are not statistics.
Their stories matter.
Their community matters.
Sixth Street matters.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming our Salesforce Account Manager, Jordan, to Hospitality House! 💙

We spent the visit walking Jordan through our programs, introducing them to our work, and sharing the history of Hospitality House and our commitment to the San Francisco community since 1967.

This relationship—and our ability to utilize Salesforce to strengthen how we manage our donors, grants, fundraising, and relationships—would not be possible without the generosity of a private donor who makes our Salesforce platform possible.

CITY HALL — ARE YOU WATCHING? WE NEED YOU TO LISTEN!

These aren’t statistics. These are our neighbors. These are people whose lives are impacted every day by the services, safety, connection, and community found at the Sixth Street Self-Help Center.

Closing Sixth Street doesn’t make the need disappear.
It doesn’t make homelessness disappear.
It doesn’t make behavioral health challenges disappear.
It only takes away a place people know they can turn to for help.

For nearly 60 years, Hospitality House has stood with San Francisco’s most vulnerable communities. And right now, we are asking our City to stand with them too.
