The Freedom Story We prevent child exploitation in Thailand through educational scholarships and additional resources for children at risk.

The Freedom Story was born from a documentary film called The SOLD Project. When our founder Rachel Sparks learned about child s*xual exploitation in Thailand, she decided to expose it through the power of film. After interviewing dozens of s*x workers, common themes became apparent: poverty, a lack of education, and a lack of options. Rachel responded by providing a scholarship to an at-risk stud

ent, and The Freedom Story was born. Our scholarships and resources empower at-risk Thai students to stay in school, pursue their dreams, and break the cycle of poverty. In a world marked by division, how can we grow together in community?

At The Freedom Story, we envision a world where every child is free, thriving, and protected from exploitation and human trafficking. Through locally led prevention and a diverse community, we educate children, strengthen families, and build safer communities.

This year, we partnered with a local organization to host a children’s workshop focused on trust, growth and safety. At this event, children were able to respect age and cultural differences, and connect with peers in a new way. Through community, we can learn how to pursue unity and grow together.

Every child should have access to human rights, regardless of citizenship or status. Share this post with friends to raise awareness and support students who are fighting for their rights.

Ahyi is stateless, meaning he lacks access to many basic rights.

After a 14-year wait, he finally became a legally recognized Thai resident. The Freedom Story team supported Ahyi by providing counseling, covering his tuition fees, and guiding him through the grueling legal process.

Most importantly, the team regularly connected with Ahyi and his family to show them why getting legal status mattered, as they had been regularly disappointed by the process.

The journey was filled with obstacles and delays, but Ahyi's breakthrough is so significant that ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) has adopted his case as an official case study on tracking citizenship and legal status.

When we join forces, everything can change. Yami’s story is a powerful example of how community collaboration can completely transform a child’s journey.

Yami was found abandoned in her village and was rescued by the Thai Akha Mission Foundation. She became a scholarship student at the Freedom Story soon after, where she received training, education, and counseling regarding her rights and legal status.

Like many stateless students, Yami experienced increased vulnerability, lacking full medical coverage, education, and financial support. The Freedom Story partnered with the Thai Akha Mission Foundation to provide step-by-step advice on navigating complex government systems and tracking processes.

The Freedom Story stepped in alongside the Thai Akha Mission Foundation to provide step-by-step advice on navigating the complex government systems and to help track the case's progress with state officials.

After 9 years of dedication, Yami is now a legally recognized Thai citizen.

At the Freedom Story, we believe every child deserves a life marked by freedom instead of exploitation. When children stay in school, have strong support systems, and live in vigilant communities, they avoid exploitation and thrive.

We specialize in preventing exploitation at its source, and it works! Our scholarship students, who are among the most vulnerable, now have a 90% high school graduation rate, compared to 23% of their peers in the region.

At The Freedom Story, our students and staff come from varied backgrounds and ethnicities. We are led by staff from the local community, who share our students’ languages, cultures, and traditions. By strengthening local leadership and celebrating diversity, we can create sustainable and lasting change in our communities.

This July 30, take time to reflect: what can you do to make a difference today? How can you take a stance against human trafficking in your community?

Consider partnering with the Freedom Story to prevent human trafficking in schools, homes, and villages across Northern Thailand.

Since 2008, we have protected more than 1,000 students by providing scholarships, mentorship, and training on trafficking prevention.

We invest in families through home visits, where our team provides support with trafficking awareness, relationship-building, citizenship, and financial management.

We work alongside local leaders in villages to build safe zones that deter traffickers, whether that's working with village leaders to enact policies or training churches, NGOs, and teachers to recognize risk, intervene early, and protect their communities from trafficking.

Misu was born and raised in Thailand, yet spent much of her life missing out on opportunities due to her legal status. When she joined The Freedom Chapter, our team helped her obtain the necessary documentation, navigate DNA testing, and push Misu’s application across the finish line.

“Through The Freedom Chapter, our scholarship program, we build stable support systems around a child that reduce their trafficking vulnerabilities and position them to protect themselves and others from exploitation.

This includes access to scholarships that cover school fees and essentials, trafficking-prevention training, mentorship, and family support through home visits and caregiver workshops.

For our stateless children, our team also works to help them on the arduous, often confusing path toward citizenship. We help each stateless student in our program acquire paperwork, navigate the system, receive legal counsel, understand their rights, and follow each step of the process.

In the last year, our team helped five stateless students become Thai citizens, and one became a permanent resident.
