David Tudor's diagram for "Forest Speech."

See it performed on June 26th when Other Minds welcomes Composers Inside Electronics to perform works by David Tudor (1926–1996) in celebration of his centennial, as well as Composer Inside Electronics 50th Anniversary.

David Tudor is, perhaps, most famously known as part and principal interpreter of the New York School—John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Christian Wolff. With Cage, in the early 1960s, Tudor also began to pioneer the use of live electronics in performance, as opposed to exclusively on recordings. To further this practice, Tudor formed Composers Inside Electronics 1973, whose original core members, along with Tudor, were John Driscoll, Paul DeMarinis, Phil Edelstein, Linda Fisher, Ralph Jones, Martin Kalve, and Bill Viola. Their first work was a collaboratively realized “electroacoustic environment” conceived by Tudor: Rainforest IV. This first version of the group was active between 1976 and 1981. Reformed in 1996 for Tudor’s memorial service, current members include John Bischoff, Paul DeMarinis, John Driscoll, Phil Edelstein, Michael Johnsen—and during the performances they will be joined by James Fei.

Last night on MFOM: Juri Seo and King Britt

Rachel Schonfeld began a series of programs taking a listen to the composers performing at our very own Other Minds Festival this year. The Festival will take place October 8th through the 11th at the Brava Theater in San Francisco. On this program, we took a look at the work of Juri Seo (above), pianist and composer, for the first hour and King Britt, electronic musician and composer, for the second.

Current, three works by 2019 Guggenheim Fellow Samuel Adams, two of which are world premiere recordings. The title work, Current, scored for string quartet and resonating snare drums, is performed by the Spektral Quartet, which co-commissioned the piece with Cal Performances; this album marks one of the group’s last projects as an ensemble. At the 2022 premiere in Berkeley, the San Francisco Chronicle called Current “a superbly inviting meditation on our old friends harmony, rhythm and rhetoric,” adding that the work represents “a powerfully precise convergence of ambition and means.” Bookending that large-scale work are Violin Diptych (world premiere recording), performed by violinist Karen Gomyo and pianist Conor Hanick, and Shade Studies, a piano solo performed by Hanick with electronics. Current is available for pre-order here.

The string quartet Current that provides the centerpiece of Adams’ new album dates from 2016, when Spektral Quartet commissioned the composer to write a short work that became the 12-minute study Quartet Movement. Though that piece stands alone, Adams sensed that it might also be used as the basis for something larger, so over the next few years he expanded its scope. The present five-movement work, completed in 2019, was co-commissioned by Spektral Quartet and Cal Performances, with additional assistance from New Music USA.
