This morning we honor two milestones that share the same spirit. 81 years ago, on August 15th, Korea was liberated — a nation reclaiming peace and freedom. That day is remembered as Gwangbokjeol, “the day the light returned.”
We express our deepest gratitude and respect to all those who devoted their lives to Korea’s independence. That spirit of resilience and self-determination still defines Korea and its people — at home and across the world, including right here in San Francisco.
50 years ago, San Francisco and Seoul became sister cities. What began as an agreement has grown into decades of exchange — in culture, business, education, and friendship. This partnership is a testament to everyone who has served this committee and kept the relationship alive.
So this morning, we celebrate both: Korea’s 81 years of liberty, and 50 years of friendship between San Francisco and Seoul. 🇺🇸🇰🇷
