Hi Folks,

The Palo Alto Daily Post has a good article in today’s paper titled Palo Alto is claiming SF hoards water.

Unfortunately, the article isn’t posted online, so I’m attaching a copy.

One thing you might find a little confusing is that it sounds like we might be against water conservation, which is far from the case. Water conservation is great if it helps the environment, but the way the SFPUC manages its reservoirs provides very little, if any, ecosystem benefits.

The SFPUC’s Design Drought doesn’t just harm the environment, but ratepayers as well. As people use less water (based on unfounded claims that we might run out) the price of water must increase to cover fixed costs. The Palo Alto City Council cares about the environment and endorsed the Bay Delta Plan in 2018, but unfortunately, most other city leaders don't seem to care much. Rate hikes have proven to be a more effective way to get their attention. Amending the Design Drought would benefit both the environment and ratepayers.

If you’re inspired, it would be great to see some letters to the editor — [email protected]

You could also help by forwarding the article to your local paper and encourage them to write something similar. And of course elected officials might be interested in the leadership displayed in Palo Alto.

Onward!

-Peter
