Dear Friends,
Last year, Music National Service Initiative doubled-down on , a campaign to infuse the "National Day of Service" with music.
On Monday, January 18th, with support from volunteers at Google, Smule, Plus One, and Corporation for National and Community Service, people across the country will honor Dr. King's message– that we're all connected– by connecting through music.
Visit musicMLK.org for ideas on how to get involved. Sing with friends by downloading our MLK song list or Smule's "Sing! Karaoke" app. Instagram, Facebook or Tweet with a song that helped you bridge a boundary, open your understanding or create community.
Positive action through music is a simple and powerful way to celebrate MLK Day.
Here are some Music Actions folks have already shared through our website:
Brenna Kempf's First Stage children's theater students in Milwaukee will present a mini play based on Angela Johnson's book 'A Sweet Smell of Roses' and sing "Hymn 725, Oh Freedom"
Amy Ryan, a music therapy major from from Ypsilanti, Michigan will lead a downtown music jam with her friends.
Heidi Stirling, a music teacher from Chicago is organizing a group of elementary music students and adults to perform at a senior home.
Dennis Negrin from Jacksonville, FL has volunteered the Crescendo Amelia Big Band to play in a park, school or at a retirement community.
Alexia Ellison from A.M.E. Church in Scottsboro, Alabama will host their Annual Soup Day with singing, prayers, and poems for all.
Vilma Wallace in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, is organizing a sing-along at their Fun Walk & Health Fair at the American Legion.
We will update our Music Action Map with inspiring activities like these, and continue to share, as we approach January 18th.
However you choose to spend your MLK holiday, nothing beats music and service to connect us to one another. Let's do this, let's play, .
Thank you. Please spread the word!
