The Eviction Defense Collaborative Housing is a human right. Advocating for tenants facing eviction in San Francisco. We look forward to assisting you in person!

Free legal aid, rental assistance, and homelessness prevention. ⬇️ Each year, we provide emergency legal services and rental assistance to 5,000+ tenants in San Francisco. Eviction Defense Collaborative (EDC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting for the rights of low-income tenants in San Francisco. EDC provides free legal representation, rental assistance, and shelter client advocacy

to help prevent eviction and homelessness. As the lead agency for the Tenant Right to Counsel (TRC) program, EDC plays a pivotal role in ensuring tenants facing eviction have access to legal representation—dramatically improving outcomes for tenants in San Francisco. In addition to legal support, EDC offers rental assistance and advocates for vulnerable populations, working with other community organizations to provide holistic services. With a strong track record, including a 93% success rate in keeping tenants in their homes, EDC helps more than 5,000 individuals annually navigate the complexities of housing law, keeping people in their homes and contributing to a more equitable, just San Francisco.

Facing an eviction can feel overwhelming, but you still have rights, and you still have options.

Legal representation can help you understand the process, challenge improper notices, negotiate fair agreements, and protect your housing.

Every day at EDC, we see how early legal help changes outcomes for families, seniors, workers, and neighbors across San Francisco. If you’ve received an eviction notice, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

✨ If your family is facing eviction, here are three steps you can take today:

1️⃣ Don’t move out; your landlord must go through the legal process before any lockout can happen.
2️⃣ Gather your documents (notices, lease, and rent receipts). This helps advocates to support you faster.
3️⃣ Reach out for help early. Legal aid and rental assistance can stop or delay eviction and protect your family.

You deserve safety, stability, and support, and there are organizations ready to stand with you.

For nearly three decades, one idea has guided EDC’s work: no one should lose their home simply because they can’t access help in time.

What began as a small community effort in 1996 is now one of San Francisco’s most important eviction-prevention resources, offering free legal defense, emergency rental assistance, shelter advocacy, and tenant education across the city.

As eviction filings reach some of their highest levels in years, this work matters more than ever. And today, every tenant has the right to support.

If you or someone you know is facing eviction, you don’t have to navigate it alone.

Finding a new home after an eviction is possible, and more within reach than many renters realize.

In San Francisco, most eviction filings never become public, and many landlords are willing to look beyond a difficult chapter to understand the full story. With the right support, a clear explanation, and a strong application, tenants can rebuild stability and secure safe housing again.

At EDC, we guide renters through this process with compassion and clarity, from understanding your rights to preparing the documents that help you put your best foot forward.

EDC serves San Francisco's most vulnerable communities, including immigrants, who struggle to maintain stable housing, and who are now at constant risk of ICE detention. This week, one of our clients was detained by ICE, preventing him from appearing in court, putting his case and housing at risk. If he cannot appear in court, he will be evicted.

A San Francisco tenant from Russia is set to lose his eviction case because he's in ICE custody and cannot appear in court.

This story made the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle , because it reflects a growing reality for many tenants in San Francisco.

People who paid their rent, followed the rules, and still received eviction notices, often without understanding why or what to do next. Language barriers, system changes during foreclosure, and confusing processes can move cases forward fast, even when tenants did nothing wrong.

That’s why one thing matters most: never ignore an eviction notice, even if you believe it’s a mistake. Acting quickly can protect your rights and your home.

Support and legal help are available.
