Thank you to everyone who joined us for JUSTICE ON THE JOB and helped us celebrate Legal Aid at Work's 110th anniversary.

It was an inspiring evening spent with workers, advocates, partners, supporters, and community leaders who share a commitment to workplace justice. We were honored to hear from keynote speaker Catherine E. Lhamon, present the Mathew O. Tobriner Public Service Award to Justice Martin J. Jenkins, and celebrate Joan Graff's remarkable 45 years of leadership at Legal Aid at Work.

We're deeply grateful to our sponsors, Board of Directors, event committee members, volunteers, speakers, honorees, and everyone who made this milestone celebration possible.

As we look ahead, we're energized by the community that continues to power this work. Thank you for standing with workers and helping advance justice across California!

We were honored to attend and present at the Trans Empowerment Summit hosted by San Joaquin Pride Center in Stockton! The event brought together LGBTQ+ community members, allies, advocates, and local organizations to share resources, build community, and support one another.

Our team shared Know Your Rights information and connected with attendees about workplace protections for LGBTQ+ workers in California. We’re grateful to Native CORE Stockton and the many community members who stopped by our booth, shared their stories, and helped create such a welcoming and empowering space.

Trans and nonbinary workers deserve workplaces free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Events like this remind us how powerful community care, education, and solidarity can be in the fight for dignity and justice for all workers.

Legal Aid at Work stands in solidarity with the Southern Poverty Law Center and the broader civil rights community in condemning attacks on lawful civil rights advocacy.

Organizations like SPLC have spent decades challenging hate, discrimination, and extremism while defending the rights of workers, immigrants, voters, LGBTQ+ communities, and other marginalized groups. Efforts to target civil rights organizations for doing this work threaten far more than a single institution—they threaten the ability of advocates and communities to speak out against injustice without fear.

That’s why we joined organizations across the country in signing onto a coalition letter defending civil rights organizations and calling attention to the dangerous consequences of these attacks.

Worker justice, civil rights, and democracy are deeply connected. We will continue standing with organizations and communities fighting for dignity, safety, and equal protection under the law. ✊

A few weeks ago, our team joined Quest for Democracy in Sacramento alongside directly impacted leaders, advocates, and families fighting for change.

✊ Sandra Johnson from our Racial Economic Justice team participated in legislative lobby visits and spoke with lawmakers about AB 2095, the California Fair Chance Improvement Act.
⚖️ The bill would strengthen protections for workers with conviction histories and help expand fair access to employment opportunities.
🤝 We’re proud to stand with impacted communities advocating for dignity, opportunity, and second chances.

More than 20 construction workers in Oakland are stepping forward to recover over $300,000 in unpaid wages tied to a publicly funded housing development, and their fight is moving forward.

At Legal Aid at Work, we’re proud to represent workers in this case. Senior Staff Attorney, Alexx Campbell is working directly with workers as they seek accountability and fair pay for their labor.

This moment reflects what’s possible when workers take action and speak up after months of underpayment, supported by community partners, and backed by legal advocacy pushing wage claims forward.

These workers helped build housing for their community. They deserve to be paid fully and fairly for that work.

We’re proud to support the work advancing AB 2495, and grateful for the leadership of our colleague Hailey McAllister, Senior Staff Attorney on our National Origin and Immigrants’ Rights team, who testified in support of the bill.

Her testimony underscores a simple but critical principle: workers should be able to assert their rights without fear.

AB 2495 would help strengthen those protections by:

🔹 Clarifying that employers cannot use immigration-related threats to retaliate against workers
🔹 Making clear that it’s also unlawful to prevent workers from exercising their rights in the first place
🔹 Reinforcing that workers can report violations, seek information, and participate in enforcement without intimidation

It’s time to break the silence on menopause in the workplace.

Menopause can significantly impact a worker’s daily life, yet our workplace protections haven’t always kept up. No one should face discrimination or lose their livelihood because of a natural health transition.

AB 1940 is a game-changer. This bill would clarify that discrimination based on menopause and related conditions is unlawful under California law. ⚖️

At Legal Aid at Work, we believe workplaces should respond to workers’ real health needs.

We’re proud to advocate for:
✅ Stronger legal protections.
✅ Clearer access to accommodations.
✅ Accountability for employers.

Too many qualified workers are being shut out of the workforce.

Even when they’re ready and able to do the job, a past conviction history remains a barrier to employment. Fair Chance Month is a reminder that these obstacles are systemic—not personal.

At Legal Aid at Work, we’re fighting to change the narrative by:

⚖️ Supporting workers navigating reentry challenges.
📜 Advocating for transparent fair chance hiring policies.
🤝 Holding employers accountable to ensure real opportunity.

Access to employment opportunities means more than a paycheck. It means stability, dignity and the ability to move forward.

Today, we honor the workers who never made it home, and the many others whose lives have been permanently changed by unsafe working conditions.

As Gowri shares, Workers’ Memorial Day is a reminder that behind every statistic is a person—a family member, a friend, someone whose absence is deeply felt. At Legal Aid at Work, we work alongside workers every day who are living with the impact of unsafe workplaces, and who continue to push for safer conditions for everyone.

Today is for those who lost their lives on the job, and for those who continue to carry the physical and emotional impact of unsafe work. 💙

Sandra Johnson and Molly Lau, two of our dedicated team members, spoke at the State Capitol in support of AB 2095, the Fair Chance Improvement Act.

This bill would strengthen California’s Fair Chance Act by closing gaps that still allow workers to be excluded from jobs based on old or irrelevant conviction history, and by creating more accountability in hiring decisions.

At Legal Aid at Work, we work alongside workers navigating these barriers every day. Through advocacy and direct legal support, we’re pushing to ensure fair chance hiring is meaningful and enforceable.

This is about making sure workers have a real opportunity to rebuild, support their families, and move forward. We’re proud of Sandra and Molly for using their voices to push for change.
