Today is the 50th Anniversary of ! “As turns 50, equity is still elusive for 3.4 million girls playing high school sports.”

This 4-month Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism / Howard Center at University of Maryland investigation shows how the policy is failing countless girls in high schools across the country.

The report highlights some of the work of our Fair Play program and includes interviews with current and former Legal Aid at Work attorneys, Elizabeth Kristen and Kim Turner, and some of LAAW’s brave clients.

“I knew that things weren’t equal, but I just thought that’s the way it was.” —Grace Saad, former softball player, Buena High School, Ventura, CA

“We still estimate that the majority of schools are likely out of compliance with the law,” said Sarah Axelson, vice president of advocacy at the Women's Sports Foundation.

Great opinion piece from our own Kim Turner in The Sacramento Bee writing about in sports:

"With ’s 50th anniversary next year and many girls and women still confined to the sidelines or uneven playing fields, female sports media is also a way to spur participation and strengthen school, college and park athletic programs for girls and women.

Let’s continue watching women’s sports with the same fervor as our Olympic days, whether that’s the WNBA, the National Women’s Soccer League, the newly-minted Athletes Unlimited leagues or women’s college athletics."

An analysis found that women’s sports were broadcast 58% of the time during the Tokyo Olympics, reflecting what audiences increasingly want. | Commentary
