Meet the newest member of our Board of Directors, Catalina Hinojosa! 🥳🎉

Catalina is the founder and CEO of the San Pedro Recovery Alliance. A community advocate and inspiring leader, Catalina works to support people on their journey to stability, from people navigating substance use challenges to justice-impacted individuals and people experiencing homelessness. Through transitional housing, reentry services, and employment, mental health, and life skills support, Catalina is helping strengthen her community and change lives. She is a graduate of Brilliant Corners' Breaking Barriers program, and was honored by LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn as the 2026 Woman of the Year in recognition of her leadership and dedication to the San Pedro community.

We're proud to be partnering with San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center to expand opportunities through the development of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Together we're creating safe, high-quality homes that promote independence, community inclusion, and lasting for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD).

Some of the wonderful residents of our Homekey Harbor city site! This month we celebrate the one-year anniversary of the site's grand opening. This former Motel 6 site was converted into dynamic housing, and is now home to 49 households who have experienced homelessness or are at high risk of experiencing homelessness. Homekey Harbor City provides onsite Case Management services to residents and the beautiful site includes a range of amenities, from a community garden, laundry facilities, bicycle storage, parking, a pet area, and outdoor courtyard for residents to enjoy.

Another wonderful project completed through the Interim Housing Accessibility Improvement Fund (IHAIF)! Operated in partnership with L.A. Care Health Plan, HealthNet, Inc., Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative, and Brilliant Corners, the IHAIF Grant Program provides funding to Interim Housing providers for accessibility-related projects that improve access or usability for people with disabilities.

We are honored to spotlight Exodus Foundation, which operates the Seton Hall interim housing facility in Los Angeles, providing 205 beds for individuals with physical and behavioral health-related disabilities experiencing homelessness and in need of and services. With the help of the IHAIF grant program, the Exodus Foundation was able to complete a major improvement project, upgrading the main entrance of the facility with ADA-compliant ramps, stairs, landings, and railings. The project was completed in July, creating a more accessible environment for residents and visitors with mobility challenges.

Our LA Housing Acquisition team was honored to join University of Southern California's Neighborhood Data for Social Change (NDSC) second annual State of Los Angeles County Housing and Neighborhoods convening at The California Endowment, marking the release of the latest State of Los Angeles County Housing and Neighborhoods report. Our team appreciated the opportunity to dive into report findings, connect with partners across the sector around housing and homelessness, and learn about housing and neighborhood trends shaping LA County.

Families experiencing housing instability have unique needs, especially families with young children. Felix, Yemerin, and their two young children, found themselves experiencing housing instability and had spent many long nights on public transit before being connected to vital support.

A Long Beach Quality of Life Officer connected the family to LA County's Metro Homeless Outreach Team and local support services. Metro Los Angeles, the Multi-Service Center, and partner organizations helped the family access essential services and housing support through the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative.

Brilliant Corners and Helpline Youth Counseling, Inc. supported the family through their housing navigation process and helped them sign a lease to their new apartment. We are so happy to share that Felix, Yemerin, and their children are now safely and stably housed.

Felix and Yeremin no longer have stress about where their family will sleep. Their story shows us how housing stability keeps families together, and how coordination and partnership across our sector can give families the support and care they need to thrive.

One year ago, we celebrated the Grand Opening of Homekey Harbor City, a former Motel 6 that is now a thriving community providing supportive housing, thanks to an amazing collaboration between Brilliant Corners, the California Department of Housing & Community Development, Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative, Los Angeles County Development Authority, Genesis L.A., and CSH.

In partnership with Sparano + Mooney Architecture and Walton Construction, Inc., we reimagined the existing building into dynamic permanent supportive housing. Homekey Harbor City was fully renovated with all new interiors and exteriors, including new building and mechanical systems, and new exterior hardscapes for parking, site accessibility, operations, community space, and security. The renovations also included mobility and communication features that modified existing spaces into four fully accessible mobility units and two fully accessible communication units.

Homekey Harbor City provides 50 units—including 49 units for households who have experienced—and one unit for onsite property management to support building residents.

The Grand Opening featured Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell (SD-2), who performed the official ribbon-cutting to mark the site’s opening, Brilliant Corners Chief Executive Officer, William F. Pickel; Gustavo Velasquez, Director, California Department of Housing & Community Development; Emilio Salas, Executive Director, Los Angeles County Development Authority; Leepi Shimkhada, Chief Program Officer of Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative; and Jennifer Lee, Principal Analyst, Permanent Housing, Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative.
