Celebrate the Summer Solstice with the Friends of Calligraphy and the Reed College Alumni Association in Golden Gate Park! We’ll gather at the Ghirardelli Card Shelter in the park's beautiful Oak Grove to create Weathergrams. Developed by Lloyd Reynolds & inspired by Japanese traditions, weathergrams are short poems written on kraft paper and hung from trees to weather gracefully. This beautiful, fleeting art form celebrates nature and highlights its ever-changing beauty.

When: 1-3 PM, June 21 2026
Where: Ghirardelli Card Shelter, Golden Gate Park
Who: Everyone is welcome — all skill levels, calligraphers and non-calligraphers alike
What to bring: Your favorite pens or markers, creative text ideas, sun protection, warm layers, and snacks or beverages to share

RSVP: Please email Ian Atlas ([email protected]) by Friday, June 19, and share any accessibility needs.

Our featured member of June is Carla Tenret:

At the 51st Annual General Meeting, May 3, 2026, the Friends of Calligraphy named Carla J. Tenret an Honorary Life Member. Carla is a calligrapher and teacher, a long-time FOC member, and much beloved as teacher and friend.

This post is a small selection of the books Carla did as a member of the Robins, a shared calligraphy book-creating collaboration of Carla, JoAnn Burchfiel Brand, Meredith Jane Klein, Victoria Lee, Catherine von Schwind, and Mary Ann Wight. Carla's fellow Robins selected these favorite page spreads of Carla’s from their Robins’ books. Sometimes the collaboration includes shared marks on each page, sometimes only one calligrapher.

1 - From Meredith Klein's second book, "Transformation," 2007-2008. This spread is Carla's work only.

2 - Carla's red lettering & some illustrations in Victoria Lee's book, "Mindfulness of the Garden." Rubber stamps are Mary Ann, pencil caps & color pencil are Catherine, other marks, Victoria.

3 - Page spread from Victoria's book, "Light & Dark, Thresholds, Edges & Leaps." Carla did the smaller lettering.

4 - Mary Ann Wight's book "Peddler's Sample Case" - Carla's samples were bulbs that grew in her garden. In this book, Mary Ann gave folks the option to have their own spreads.

5 - Carla's Colophon from Mary Ann's book, "Atmospherules" - Carla illustrated Wordsworth's "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud." Carla's watercolor painting on the right was reproduced in colored thread on this side. Folks again had the option to have their own spread.

6 - "Atmospherules" the verso.

7 - Catherine von Schwind's book "Revelation." Carla's entry in the colophon is dated August 27, 2002. Carla had taken the icon workshop shortly before she worked on my book and she wanted to use that as the focus of her contribution.

8 - Carla's writing in JoAnn Brand's book, "Light & Air," poetry by Ed Grossmith.

9 - Carla’s writing Robin’s inspirations from JoAnn's book, "The Outermost House," author Henry Beston.
