Joint Bar Association Statement Regarding Federal Immigration Enforcement
January 30, 2026
We condemn the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good during federal immigration enforcement operations and are deeply disturbed by the conditions that made their deaths possible.
These incidents expose serious and systemic failures in current immigration enforcement practices. They reflect an increased reliance on violence, racial profiling, and tactics that place human life at unacceptable risk.
These incidents occur alongside broader harms that have long affected communities of color, including family separation and practices that harm children and destabilize entire communities. Such conduct violates basic principles of human dignity and human rights. It represents a profound injury to the civil liberties and constitutional values Americans hold dear.
As members of the legal profession, we cannot remain silent. We call for transparency, accountability, and meaningful oversight of federal immigration enforcement agencies. We urge elected officials to take immediate action to ensure that immigration enforcement practices comply with constitutional guarantees and fundamental human rights.
