WOMEN我們

WOMEN我們 Inaugurated in Shanghai, WOMEN我們 has been the first exhibition to address feminism and genderqueer equality in modern day China that traveled to US.

Visibility, Authority, and Possibility are the three threads that weave the foundation for WOMEN我們 . Despite the different contexts of China and America, the discourse on gender and sexuality incite transformational leadership and insight in the development of the world as a whole. Feminism and sexual liberation in China are largely viewed as an imported idea which bulldozes a so-called “tradition

al value.” However, body and desire, for generations of Chinese people, have been and are censored, policed, and punished. Furthermore, the artistic expression of such is silenced and dismissed due to a male driven art world dominated by the market economy. This exhibition focuses on the exploration and expression in visual culture. Instead of emphasizing the gender of the artists, the selection of works are based on their relevance to gender and sexuality. From established to emerging, the participating artists were born from the 60s to 80s, with nongovernmental organizations founded less than ten years ago. Their work includes various mediums such as performance, installation, video, drawings, and posters. With a goal to introduce a visual experience on the edge
or the forefront of culture, these works strive to influence and push the new value proposition, which are often lacked, estranged, or even feared by mainstream society in China.

Conversation with organizers and artist
6:30 dinner at Bund Shanghai (AA)

On June 24, 2012, a group of activists and artists staged a public performance Occupy Shanghai Subway. They wore artist Gao Ling’s work “Hey TTTTouch Me” and held iPad flickering slogan “It’s a dress, not a yes.” It was a protest against the subways official Weibo posting a photo of a girl and accusing her of inviting harassment. The performance was a direct result of exhibition WOMEN我們(2011-2012), which took place in conjunction of the first Global Chinese Women and Visual Representation Conference. The performance went viral immediately and has become one of the most iconic moments for feminist movement in China. The lead organizer Shanghai NvAi (girls love) leader Xiangqi has been harassed and threatened by government and is now in California, along with many feminist activists in advocacy, journalism, academic, grassroots mobilizing that now take refuge in the US… we will have a small gathering, maybe just to be in the same room is already an accomplishment.

Ten years, it goes by just like that… so much hope and dreams were planted as seeds and we saw how beautifully some have grown. One of the most magical was a young woman told me her mom brought her to the opening ten years ago and how that informed her since. Many stories, tears and mostly joys. We are still together.
