Food Connect

Food Connect Food Connect is a nonprofit organization dedicated to bridging the gaps our food system to build healthier communities.

We are passionate about leveraging technology and existing community efforts to bring about a more thoughtful, sustainable, and connected food system. There are amazing initiatives happening all over the world but so much momentum is lost when there is no easy way to connect and collaborate in real time. We are building solutions to help lower the barriers to collaboration and increase efficiencie

s in food distribution and collaboration to drive better health outcomes for communities and individuals.

For the past few years, we’ve helped out with food rescue at the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run, and we were thrilled to do it again this year.

The Broad Street Run is the most well-attended 10-mile run in the US, so there's a lot of food to be rescued. This year we rescued 4,000 lbs of food and got it to a community pantry. 🍌🚚

Food rescue requires seamless transportation and logistics, and we are so grateful to folks who reach out to us for timely coordination. We also love hearing responses after the fact, to learn where the food went and what the impact was.

At a time when food insecurity remains a significant challenge across Pennsylvania as many families face rising food costs and economic instability, collaborations like these are increasingly important.

“I wake up in the morning, and my first thought is how can I help somebody today?”

Last month, we sat down with community partner Tanya Veltz , co-founder of Tree House Cares , to learn about their work to expand food security in Essex County, New Jersey by opening their doors, sharing what they have, and supporting hundreds of families each week.

In Essex County, home delivery is more than a convenience. It is a lifeline for neighbors facing barriers to food access.

For Tanya, helping others is not just part of her work. It’s a way of life. We’re honored to support leaders like her who are building stronger, more connected food systems in Newark and beyond, by providing reliable delivery logistics and transportation.

Access to healthy food starts with strong community partnerships. 💚

It's been a joy working alongside Clay County Public Health Center - Missouri and Kanbe's Markets to help ensure a steady, reliable flow of fresh food for CCPHC’s Mobile Food Pantry. Each month, Food Connect coordinates the food rescue, transportation, and delivery process so fresh food reaches families across Clay County efficiently and with care. 🚛🥕

Together, we’re reducing food waste, supporting long-term community health, and strengthening a more connected, community-based food system that serves thousands of households each year.

Community power in action 🌱

In San Francisco’s Mission District, Mission Food Hub has been providing families with nutritious, culturally-appropriate groceries every Friday since the COVID-19 pandemic, creating a space rooted in respect.

Our recent visit was a joyful reminder of the strength of community-led solutions, made even brighter by an abundance of mushrooms from SF Market 🍄🌻 We’re proud to stand with this incredible organization as they work to create a more equitable food system.

Ending hunger requires more than emergency response. It requires long-term investment in community-rooted food systems. We work alongside community partners across the U.S. who know that families with children are facing impossible choices every day.

Schools are incredibly important sites to provide consistent access to nutritious meals. A great example of this is featured in our recent blog post exploring how schools across the Oakland Unified school District are eliminating food waste and ensuring students have access to as much of the available food as possible before it's wasted.

There is so much that can be done! Volunteer, donate, join us in the fight to end childhood food insecurity. 💚

This spring, we’re highlighting the people and partnerships behind locally rooted solutions that inspire us to go further. 🌱✨

Our latest blog shares the story of St. Christopher's Foundation for Children and the Philadelphia organizations that came together during the pandemic to better understand the food access challenges families were facing. What emerged was more than an emergency response.

Together, they built a decentralized food delivery model rooted in trust, flexibility, and care, creating new possibilities for community-centered food access that continue to shape Food Connect’s work today. 💚

Last week, our team had the opportunity to visit Our Community Grocery Store, a mutual aid initiative led by Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and operated by Clinton Hill Community Action.

This visit was more than a tour; it was a meaningful conversation about the future of hunger relief in Newark and the role community-led solutions play in building stronger, more equitable food systems.

We discussed how initiatives like mutual aid grocery stores, food hubs, and food co-ops can be scaled and sustained through strong business operations and deep local partnerships. Over the coming months, we’re excited to continue this work alongside partners who bring critical expertise and lived experience to the table.

Earlier this week, members of our team joined groups from across the country at the National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Food Research & Action Center . Federal programs like SNAP and WIC that, among many others, were cut or changed substantially in last year's federal budget bill, were front and center.

We see everyday how these policy changes have already taken a huge toll on people, leaving them without the support, time, or ability to access food and resources. Advocates in D.C. this week stressed the importance of continuing to listen to community needs and informing our legislators about the real-life impacts their constituents are experiencing. We’re leaving the conference grounded in a shared commitment to center those most impacted by these policy changes and motivated to continue working to transform local food systems through collaboration and advocacy.

We’re thrilled to share this story from our partner, Share My Meals Inc.

Most people think solving food insecurity starts with more food donations. We've learned that it starts with better systems. And healthy systems rely on strong collaborative partnerships.

Together with Share My Meals and The Unforgotten Haven, Food Connect is creating smarter, more connected systems that move surplus food efficiently, strengthen communities, and reduce waste. By combining expertise across distribution channels and delivery, we’re seeing that lasting change doesn’t just come from giving more, it comes from working together.
