Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA)

Interamerican Association for Environmental Defense (AIDA) PROTECTING OUR RIGHT TO A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT. AIDA is the only regional organization of environmental legal experts who are both from and in Latin America.

We use the power of international law to create sustainable solutions throughout the region. AIDA is a nonprofit environmental law organization that works in the Americas across international borders to defend threatened ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them. Environmental health and human rights can no longer be protected by working within the political boundaries of individua

l nations: the 35 countries of our hemisphere are united under a common environmental flag. International problems call for international responses, and AIDA develops transnational strategies to address the environmental and human rights challenges of the 21st century.

๐ŸŒŠ A milestone for our ocean and for multilateralism!

With over 60 ratifications, the has officially entered into force, a moment years in the making. This marks a new chapter for ocean governance and global cooperation.

For the first time, we have a legal comprehensive framework to protect biodiversity in nearly half our planet.

But this is only the beginning. More countries must now ratify to participate in the first Conference of the Parties and shape how the Treaty is implemented.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Letโ€™s keep the momentum going. Every ratification counts.

We begin a new year with a spirit that calls us to think about what is possible. ๐Ÿ’ซ

Our region, Latin America, with all its contrasts, is also a melting pot of possibilities and opportunities. Let us face challenges with the strength of resilience and collectivity that are part of our identity. ๐ŸŒฑ

Let us welcome a 2026 where the pursuit of justice continues to call us.

2025 is about to end! ๐Ÿคฉ

What thoughts or images come to mind at this time of year?

We are left with a quote from senior lawyer Geraldine Izaguirre: โ€œWhat is considered normal today will not be normal tomorrow.โ€

She was not referring to the inevitable changes brought about by the passage of time, but rather those resulting from our actions that have altered and degraded the climate and the environment.

We share this reflection on the last day of the year as an invitation to reflect on what, amid contrasts, we want to care for so that it remains and flourishes. ๐ŸŒฑโœจ

12/30/2025

๐ŸŒŽ Latin America is a region of enormous natural and cultural wealth, and its people are known for their warmth and resilience.

But it is also one of the most unequal regions in the world. And that inequality is reflected in who is most affected by environmental degradation, pollution, and the impacts of the climate crisis.

๐ŸŒฑ Working to reduce these inequalities and their impacts on the environment and people is the driving force behind our work at AIDA.

Because the contrasts in our region are not a fate, but a motivation to fight for a more just and sustainable world for all.

12/29/2025

This year, during one of our team meetings, a phrase came up that stuck with us: โ€œLatin America: land of contrasts.โ€

๐ŸŒฟ As we approach the end of the year, we want to share the reflections that arose about what this extraordinary region means, and how this phrase reflects what we have learned during 2025.

๐Ÿ“ง Following the tradition of giving postcards, we are sharing the first of four postcards with reflections from our team members on what it means to live and work for environmental protection in a region where enormous disparities converge.

We invite you to share them and contribute your own reflections. ๐Ÿ’ซ

What environmental news made us smile in 2025? ๐Ÿ˜Š

The year is coming to an end, and that always prompts us to take stock. We know that in turbulent times it is difficult to look back and see with optimism what we, as humanity, have gone through this year.

๐ŸŒฑ But we believe it is also an opportunity to remember and reflect on the events that inspired us, the advances that encouraged us, and the achievements that strengthened our belief that another world is possible.

With that in mind, we are sharing a compilation of environmental news stories from this year to help us maintain hope for 2026.๐Ÿ’ซ

๐ŸŒŽ Published this year, Advisory Opinion 32 of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights confirmed something undeniable: States have a legal obligation to protect people and communities from the climate crisis, addressing both its causes and its impacts.

โš–๏ธ โœŠ For communities already living with extreme droughts, fires, and floods, this decision opens a pathway to justice.

We served as a bridge, helping ensure many of those voices could speak directly to the Court, and we contributed our own submission rooted in more than 25 years of experience connecting environmental protection with human rights.

This year, the Poqomam Maya community of Santa Cruz achieved an unprecedented court ruling against the pollution of their rivers. ๐ŸŒฑ

The ruling is a seedโ€”a precedent that could inspire action across more than 90 municipalities along the Motagua River basin, where trash flows to the Caribbean Sea and threatens the Mesoamerican Reef, one of the worldโ€™s largest and most biodiverse transboundary reef systems.
