Project Censored was founded in 1976 by journalism professor Carl Jensen. He retired in 1996, and from then through 2009, the project was directed by sociology professor Peter Phillips. Mickey Huff, history professor at Diablo valley College, became the Project Director in early 2010. Phillips continues to support the organization as President of the Media Freedom Foundation. We are a SFSU student
organization promoting media democracy and exploring news under-covered by commercial media. As part of the Project Censored national effort, students research and verify independent media stories not appearing in mainstream news, and submit these validated independent news stories to be voted on by all the PC campuses and faculty that are involved with the PC effort. The Top 25 News Stories are selected for yearly book publication. From this activity, we have realized the importance of having well-informed students to help spread the news about Project Censored and decided to establish a chapter for San Francisco State University. Project Censored believes in the importance of self-motivated, self-directed learning. As physical, emotional, spiritual, and environmental wellness is important, we also believe in the value of the knowledge and education we consume. In response to "junk food news," we instead report and discuss news that is important and full of value. We focus on the under-reported, ignored, misrepresented news that is victim to modern censorship - news that has been manipulated due to political, economic, and/or legal pressure.
