A Haircut Is Never Just a Haircut ✂️❤️
For many years, one of the simple ways we have served our neighbors in San Francisco's Tenderloin has been through free haircuts.
A few months ago, one of the ministries in our neighborhood opened a beautiful free haircut salon for the community. We honestly wondered if that would mean the end of our haircut ministry. After all, why would people come to our small space when there was another excellent option nearby?
But something unexpected happened. The same number of people kept coming. That made us stop and think.
Then we realized something important: people were not coming only for a haircut. They were coming because they knew they would be welcomed by name, listened to without judgment, prayed for if they wanted, and treated with dignity. They came because they had found a place of relationship, friendship, and genuine care.
A haircut lasts a few weeks. Love leaves a lasting mark.
Over the years, our team has worked to build trust one conversation at a time, one cup of coffee at a time, one prayer at a time, and one act of kindness at a time. The haircut simply became the doorway to something much deeper.
This is what we teach in our Discipleship Training School. The gospel is not only something we preach but also something we live.
People should not only hear about the love of Jesus; they should experience it through the way we treat them, listen to them, serve them, and walk alongside them. Our lives become the message before our words are ever spoken.
Jesus didn't simply announce the Kingdom of God. He lived among people. He ate with them, touched them, listened to them, and loved them. We want to do the same.
Our prayer is that every student who comes to our DTS learns that loving your neighbor is not just another ministry program, but a way of life.
Because sometimes the greatest miracle isn't the haircut. It's so that someone walks away knowing they are seen, valued, and deeply loved.
"Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth." 1 John 3:18.
