When the sound of bronze echoes across the mountains, it’s a direct call to the ancestors...
Deep in the Cordilleras, the Gangsa (a traditional flat bronze gong) carries the voice, power, and memory of Northern Luzon’s Indigenous communities.
For generations, playing the Gangsa has held sacred meaning:
Invoking Abundance: Sounded during key agricultural cycles to pray for bountiful harvests.
Healing & Protection: Played in sacred rituals to cleanse, heal, and summon ancestral spirits for guidance.
Fostering Peace: Beaten during peace pacts (Bodong) to forge unity and resolve conflict.
We were honored at the Uni at Ugat Music Camp, where our mentees had the privilege to learn playing techniques and cultural traditions directly from Indigenous Master Artist Mentor Manang Jenny Bawer-Young.
